Default New to the Storm

Hi all,
I have been lurking around here for a few weeks because I was going to upgrade to BB from a Palm Treo through Verizon. I really like the touch screen phones and Palm was just not doing it form e and WM was becoming more hassle than it was worth.

I was reading on the Storm and was surprised to see so many threads on users not liking it and I almost did not get it, but I have 30 days to return it so I said what the heck.

So, I got it and I REALLY like it. I had it reset once when my son was taking pictures like it was going out of style. It lags very rarely on me and I think the email is so much better than the WM setup. I have had no issues with typing on the screen but do not like the sure press, I always type in landscape. Complared to WM, I think teh OS is alot more stable and user friendly, my Treo would lock up constantly and I would do soft resets multiple times a day.

I think Crackberry is a great site with a ton of useful information. I do have a question that I could not find an answer for through searching:

Is there a way I can download app files to my memory card on my laptop and install them through my phone?

Thanks for reading!

To be honest, I go to forums for Motorcycles, fishing, video games, electronics and they all have hypocrisy to some extent. It is a part of a community I guess.

I raved about my particular device and I only got one post regarding it, all the other posts were based upon your post.....

It's all good, I just wanted to say that I like the storm and it seems to be a great device for what I need.

You may know most of this but essentially you have 3 main ways to install an app:

(1) Desktop/alx file. You download the app's alx and related cod file to your computer and install the app through Desktop Manager (DM==>Main Menu==>Application Loader==>Add/Remove Applications==>Start). Browse for the alx file....etc...etc..

(2) OTA, or Over the Air. This method you just click a link in your browser and a jad file is loaded....installation follows. Here's a good reference point for OTAs:

http://forums.crackberry.com/f134/bl...a-apps-236712/

(3) Card install. In this case, you need to place a jad file for the app on your card. To do this, download the app's alx and related cod file(s) as well as a program named Genjad4bb (can be found through a Google search). Open Genjad4BB, navigate to where you have the alx/cod files for the app (i.e., files for a desktop installation), and generate a jad file from there. Move the folder with the jad (also contains one or more cod files) to your card and put it back in your BB. Then, using a free app like BBFileScout (listed in the link above), navigate to where you have the folder with the jad and cod files. Click the jad and the installation should be triggered. [Note: Genjad is hit or miss for me....not all jad files actually work.] Why do this when an app can be installed OTA from places like the link above or the CB App Store? Some apps only offer desktop installation, with no OTA option (or the OTA link is down). The ability to install an app without connecting to DM to install the alx is helpful.

My main approach for installing apps was to create a Word document with OTA links for my apps (free and paid). After an OS change, I can just open the doc and click the OTA links to install....on by one (that is, if I don't do single restore of apps through DM). This doc is, in effect, a one-stop shop for me similar to the CB OTA link above under #2.

I've had my 9500 - and not a 9530, mind you - since May and apart from the slow camera (video cam works fine) and the occasional mem leak, I've rarely had any problems. It has never frozen up me or anything. Makes me wonder if it's the OS for the 9530 that's causing the problem or the cell providers messing around with their subscription-based apps i.e nav and etc. I've also got similar non-native apps running on my device like G Maps, Quickpull, Logmaid & lightsaber (to name a few) and my mem has never dipped below 41MB. It's really baffling to hear so much angst. Upgraded from a curve 8300 so I've been a BB user for quite a while.
