New to smartphones

Howdy,
I volunteer at a computer recycling center (working on laptops). One of our pickups recently included a dead storm which I aquired from our company. Plugged it in, charged it up, erased the 900+ emails still on the phone from 8 months ago and I have a working Storm

I thought I would just use wifi and skye but no wifi on the Storm. Ah-ha I thought, if this is bluetooth capable I could just tie into my laptop and use the wifi... and then the brain cell kicked in.

I guess I am asking what can I do with this phone? Can I use the micro-usb as a USB and move data from the computer to the phone? Do I absolutly need an account to get the phone unlocked? Just some general pointers toword info.
