RIM is a matter of national pride in Canada, their home country. It isn't just a company to them; it's an icon and a tentpole around which a lot of high-tech is based, simply because RIM showed it could actually be done. RIM is a testament to ingenuity and creativity, and I say that even as someone who doesn't like Crackberries. But I tip my hat to what they have done.
If you think Canada is upset about losing to the US in hockey, they would just about go to war if an American company like Microsoft bought RIM. They would go all out to stop it.
At the same time, Nokia is a matter of Finnish pride as well. They are proud that the biggest wireless device company is not American or Asian.
If Microsoft, the epitome of American companies, bought either RIM or Nokia, it would be like McDonalds buying up all the decent restaurants so they can sell more McNuggets. People would starve sooner than eat there out of principle.
