Default Magnum/Dakota: Sound off Stormers

Well I know this should probably go in the rumored/upcoming devices forum, but I wanted to get the opinions of the "Stormers". If a mod wants to move it, I totally understand.

Taking a look at the Magnum video, it definitley looks like an older device (much like the first Bold). From what I understand, RIM has moved on to the Dakota which is looking at an August release date.

I have to say I'm a little confused/skeptical. The biggest advantage of a touchscreen is to clear up space for a much larger screen by removing the keyboard. This allows you to watch media in much higher detail and in it's native format.

Another rumor that's floating around is that said Dakota will have a trackpad. Now I can definitley see the purpose of this, as it is difficult to click on the smaller links and place a cursor in it's intended place. I have difficulties selecting links on my Storm sometimes, even with the surepress, as sometimes all it takes is the millimeter your finger moves when depressing the screen to select a different link. I have a trackball on my Nexus One and it more or less solves that issue (although it is not nearly the caliber trackball on a BB, not fast enough yet too sensitive at the same time).

So having said all that, what would be the point of a touchscreen at all? I can't see the merit of one. Let me know what you think.

I think RIM is on the path the failure with that device. I can see the reason to have both input options on a device. Either/Or but not both. You loose screen space with the keyboard now and i do get why a device with the keyboard needs the surepress screen.
I can maybe see just a normal touch screen but even then i dont see the need. I am confused just as you on this reasoning so far.

I'm not sure if I like the idea either but, after playing w my friends new bold I kept wanting to surepress the apps on the screen lol. Maybe this is for someone who would like the quickness of touch to navigate apps and such and also have a physical keyboard.

I think what there trying to do is give a little of both worlds good for people who want that kind of thing but im not to crazy about the idea. Id rather just stick to the storm. I probably wouldn't buy it.

I guess I just don't see the point. It will definitely be interesting, especially to see how they utilize the new surepress technology. Can they even fit four buttons under the screen or will it be something different?

Most likely they'll go with just one instead of 4. The only reason they needed 4 in the S2 (and should have had more in the S1) is because the screen is so large. The Hybrid device has a much smaller screen, about the size of the Bold and doesn't really need more then one button in my opinion. Either way, it'll be a POS in my opinion, just like all the other 50 billion BB models that RIM's making because the hardware specs and OS won't be able to do isht.

**** Surepress, id 100% pass on it if it had it. Personally if the the UI was a bit more engaging then it would be a pretty cool premise (think Pixi but without being so small).

Waiting until MWC and see if anyone drops some bigguns...come on Microsoft

Surepress was an interesting idea, for sure, but I do not miss it at all.
