Default Some Ipod Questions ?

So I havn't had an ipod for awhile now and I just recently got an Ipod video classic from one of my buddies and I have a question for those who know alittle bit about them:

I want to keep some of his songs on the Ipod, can it be done cause I heard that once I plug it into my computer all the songs will be deleted ?

There are ways to keep your music I used to just rip them off my ipod using some software (google some stuff up) and then just add them to my library.

And I don't think there is a difference between syncing with a mac and pc music wise (I think if you had a touch you'd have some issues with specific things like I think mobileme?)

Ohh also lets say I wanted to leave my Ipod in my car, and take it out only to add more songs and the temperature would probably drop below 0 degrees every night since its almost winter.

Would the Ipod be fine ?

I left an ipod classic in my car for four years straight before it crapped out on me. I live in Missouri so were talking swealtering summers and freezing winters. It becomes noticably slower in the wintertime though.
