Default Question about ATT.....

I was not sure where to post this at....

I am a Storm owner on the Verizon network. For the most part I am happy with my Storm (#4). I have been with VZW for many many years.

My question is about the advertised ability on ATT to talk on the phone AND use data...email, text or internet. Is that an ability of ONLY the iphone, just smartphones or can ANY ATT phone do such?

I really wish we could do that here on the VZW network!

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it is dependent on 3G. Your device AND your network must have the capability.
For example, I had an unlocked AT&T Bold 9000 (3G device) but T-Mobile network (non-3G) so couldn't take advantage of the 3G capabilities.

Phishgirl answered your question!
It will only work if the phone is 3G capable and on ATT.

So the Blackberries on ATT will do that as well? I am not all that familiar with what ATT phones can do 3G. So it is NOT exclusive to the iphone....ok that is what I was asking.

Thanks.

This is true for any GSM network in a 3G area or on wifi.

Now remember, a wifi enabled device on VZW's network (such as the s2) can do simultanious voice and data while connected to wifi)

LTE (coming very soon, like next year) will have simultaneous voice and data, but you'll need an LTE capable phone to have the benefit.

next NE2 upgrade and you're set up.

LTE will be coming next year, but unless you're in a major market area you're probably not going to see the technology in your area until 2013 or 2014 (If you remember when VZW started to broadcast in 3G...it takes time to set up the new hard/software on the towers)

As for the surfing and calling, the only thing you can't do on VZW's network is surf the web. I'm able to send texts and emails while on my BB if the need arises. If you think about it though, how much surfing do you really do when you're on the phone talking to someone?

Actually more than you might think. Think multitasking. With the iphone I can be on the phone with the wife or a friend and if they need some sort of info I can jump right online and find the info for them. If I were with ATT....

It is simply a very nice option to have.

none of the GSM carriers are an option. the multi-tasking capabilities are nice, but the network backbone and configuration are just unpleasant to say the least. network traffic and saturation being the biggest turn off. anywhere that has good coverage is FULL UP!
