Not sure what you need the computer to do or how much money you're actually thinking so I'm going to go with what my requirements are for a laptop. So...
I don't know if it's important to you, but I can't buy a laptop that doesn't have a firewire port. You'll find that almost nothing under $1000 has one. So, based on my requirements of the usual things (4GB RAM, decent HD size and performance, dedicated video, etc.) plus the firewire requirement I came up with this for $949...

Personally, I think that's a heck of a deal at $949, but if you think you should go lower then just make sure you know what you want and have to have in your computer and then go from there.
Used to be I'd suggest Dell, but I've been a little pizzed at them this year. However, I will say that Windows 7 solved almost all the issues I've had with my Dell Latitude E6500, so I would say that if you do get a Dell, make sure you get Win 7 with it. This machine did NOT play well with XP or Vista for some reason.
And if your Mom wants to get you a Mac, but you don't want it, have her send one to me!

I've been wanting one for awhile, even if it's just the most basic model. All I want it for is easy travel and music storage. I have my Dell so wired down on the desk it's a pain to take it anywhere. Even with the docking station I still have cords plugged into every available port on the laptop itself...lol! Sometimes it sucks having a gazillion USB devices!
