Consider the Dell Studio XPS 16 laptops. The newest versions can be configured with a Core i7 Proc. It also has a 1GB dedicated ATI video card in it. Take a look on their site. Make sure it's the Studio XPS, not just regular Studio or regular XPS.

Short of that, Asus makes some budget gaming laptops, but the screens are usually lower rez ones.

Not sure what you need the computer to do or how much money you're actually thinking so I'm going to go with what my requirements are for a laptop. So...

I don't know if it's important to you, but I can't buy a laptop that doesn't have a firewire port. You'll find that almost nothing under $1000 has one. So, based on my requirements of the usual things (4GB RAM, decent HD size and performance, dedicated video, etc.) plus the firewire requirement I came up with this for $949...

Newegg.com - HP Pavilion DV6-1361SB NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo P8700(2.53GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 320GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 - Laptops / Notebooks

Personally, I think that's a heck of a deal at $949, but if you think you should go lower then just make sure you know what you want and have to have in your computer and then go from there.

Used to be I'd suggest Dell, but I've been a little pizzed at them this year. However, I will say that Windows 7 solved almost all the issues I've had with my Dell Latitude E6500, so I would say that if you do get a Dell, make sure you get Win 7 with it. This machine did NOT play well with XP or Vista for some reason.

And if your Mom wants to get you a Mac, but you don't want it, have her send one to me! I've been wanting one for awhile, even if it's just the most basic model. All I want it for is easy travel and music storage. I have my Dell so wired down on the desk it's a pain to take it anywhere. Even with the docking station I still have cords plugged into every available port on the laptop itself...lol! Sometimes it sucks having a gazillion USB devices!

Check out HP.com and customize one with the iCore7 and Windows 7 Ultimate. Pack it with 6-8 gigs of RAM and put an ATI or NVidia graphics card (preferably one with HDMI port for HD expandability). You will need that for your games and for the fact that Video cards help alleviate burden on your CPU when it comes to graphics and games. HP also come with a HD protect system that locks your HD if your laptop falls or gets joggled. If you plan to play on the internet, make sure that your ethernet card can handle 1000 MBps, and that your wireless card is a/b/g/n to have the optimum internet experience. Ensure that you have enough USB ports, 1 eSata port as well as at least 1 firewire port. You can also opt to have memory card reader slots as well. That would make it easier for you to download and share photos from your camera or video player, etc. I do not like trackpads, so I would get a separate wireless mouse as well! But by then, you might as well get that Mac instead! LoL. Good luck!
