| | Droid doesn't...
...do it for me.
Yeah, another one of these Storm1, Storm2, Droid stories. I had some extra time today while waiting for the loser commuter (City bus!) and dropped into the VZW store by the bus stop to check out the Storm2 and the Droid. Well, the rejects didn't even have a Storm2, so I wasn't able to try it, but I did look at the Droid. Granted it was a demo fake model, but I could tell from that I don't really want one. The shape and the setup on it is just wrong. Doesn't matter to me how great Android is if the device is painful to use.
First: The offset keypad is even more of a problem than I expected. The silly track thingie or whatever it is to the right of the keyboard should not be there and the keys should be bigger and spread across the whole slider. And why is the track pad thingie gold anyway? Sheesh, it's like '90's bling and it's hideous.
Second: The keys are flat and it's really hard to tell if you're on one key, two keys, or eight keys at a time. Yes I know the Storm "keys" are flat too, but at least you can see them with the blue glow and all.
Third: This is the biggest problem. The keypad does not slide out far enough. The top row of keys are very hard to use as every time you try to push on you ram the edge of the screen with your finger before getting to the keys. It was VERY awkward for me.
So, as I was afraid, Motorola let me down on the hardware design and quality. Nice try, but I think I'll wait to see what the upcoming Android phones offer.
Now, back to the S2. The sales "associate" showed even less enthusiasm for it than Verizon has in their advertising. He was like "sorry, we don't have a demo unit, but if you have the first Storm you already know what it's like. There's no difference except the keys are built into the screen. Excuse me while I yawn..." Unfortunately I can kind of understand the lack of enthusiasm, but this was unreal. He looked completely baffled when I started talking about how I would like to stick tot he Storm because of the dual radios, and then when I started talking about changing out OS files to make it work right he really got confused...lol!
Anyway, there you have it. no new phone for me...the S1 will do for now...

I agree on the things you said about the hemdroid but the S2 is a overall better BB than the S1. As you know I was a S1 owner and didnt think there would be much difference but after owning both I can absolutely say the S2 is much better than the S1

The Hemdroid, Awesome, thanks paul! I'll have to remember that one.
But anyway, I agree with the OP, that thing is fugly. I don't care what it does or doesn't do, I wouldn't be caught out in public with that thing. I normally don't care what a phone looks like but that Hemdroid is an exception. It doesn't hurt that the Storm's are so sexy though.

Well, the Droid model is not for everyone, but I'd just like to take the time to put your wall of text OP into perspective for everyone that might have overlooked the fact that you handled a mock Droid.
"I went by Toys R Us today and played around with a Matchbox version of a Ferrari. I knew right away that the real thing was not for me... The motor didn't sound good and I had an impossible time trying to fit in it. Yep, based on my time spent with it I can say without a doubt that a Ferrari is not a good fit for me. "
Everyone see what I did there?

Interesting review on a plastic dummy phone. Next time stop in an official VZW store instead of one of those franchise con artist shops. They will both devices live so that you can give a more accurate comparison. I have a storm and it's great but the Droid is really cool too. As far as the keypad is concerned, dont use it if you dont like it but its nice to have that choice. I have a friend that has one and I prefer to use the touch screen since Ive been trained that way on my storm.

I played with the Droid myself, and I may switch (as I am indifferent between storm 1 & 2) but the keyboard problems you mentioned I noticed as well (top row of keys difficult to press, the mouse pad or whatever on the right side throws the keyboard off) but then I thought once you get used to it (as you must do with every phone) those things won't matter....come on everyone who got the storm in the beginning took some time toget used to....no? I may wait and see how the HTC is, and then decide....just my .02
