Default Contact lists.. need help

How do you restore a contact list- and delete a current one?

I had all my contacts on my phone under the Default list. I added a new gmail account to my phone and inadvertently selected to synchronize contacts. This wiped out my entire contact list.

My old contacts are still there somewhere... because on the phone log I can select a contact and still view all the contact information (numbers, addresses, everything).

How do I delete the contact list that was created with the gmail account and bring back the Default list that I had?

I already deleted the gmail account, but the Contact list is still there with the name of the email address. I've done I don't know how many resets and battery pulls.

My next step would be to just completely wipe the phone and start over, but I would loose all my contacts anyway. And I refuse to believe that they could make a phone like this, a smart phone, basically a handheld computer, and there is no way to simply delete a contact list or make a new one. I can't even see a way of renaming it...

Any help or ideas much appreciated, I'm about ready to chuck this phone across the room.
