Default Why can't I update OS?

I have been through many leaked OS's and decided to downgrade from .141 to a 133/141/5.0 hybrid. I couldn't get it to work so I wiped my phone back to 75. Now I cant upgrade to any OS whatsoever. I am using app loader and have tried 132 full release and 141 full release. Each time it says there are no updates when using both app loader and DM. I am lost since I have used this process at least 10 times. Any thoughts?

Have you deleted the Vendor file and rebooted your computer?

Also, have you gone to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and deleted/removed all old OS's?

Yep, I have been searching the forum for 2 hours trying to figure this out. Even tried forcing the OS with the pulling the battery during app loader trick.

So after doing everything listed in the forums I was baffled. I uninstalled all OS from my pc and re-downloaded the full 141. When I ran the installer it didnt give me the option to install, only to repair or uninstall. So it looks like there was some sort of fragment or something that was left from 141. I'm guessing that it wouldn't let me update anything since there was something still showing 141 even though 75 was showing on my phone. Its loading now so I will let you know if that fixed it...

I have found that after installing a Hybred, some pieces of it remain even after doing an uninstall and I usually go to Program File/Common Files/Research in Motion/Shared/Loader Files and then delete any ramaining pieces.

On one occasion I also had to clean my Register because there were entries for OS's previously removed that had not been cleaned up.

It sounds like you are ok now.

Yeah everything is working good now. I actually did uninstall in programs and in the loader files. I thought I had my bases covered but apparently I didn't. Good thing the installer caught it or I would be really lost right now.

Please post the outcome of this once done. I am having the exact same issues trying to get .132 onto my Storm .75. I have never upgraded my Storm before but have upgraded my Pearl on the same computer.

There was still an entry in your registry, but fortunately the Device Software will do a repair.

Sometimes after uninstalling the OS, an uninstall and reinstall of DM also helps.

Deleting the vendor file won't do anything as this isn't a vendor specific installation.

I had it happen once. I had disabled my lan and it recognized it. You can also remove all the BB software and DM from Add/Remove programs. Then reinstall them both.

For some reason I lost all my themes and applications. I have used 3 different backup files and none bring them back. Never had that happen before.

They are 3rd party apps...not backed up by DM or with manual backups. You'd need to backup those separately.

I agree that it should not be an issue, but sometimes people cannot update until it is deleted. Doing the delete does no harm, so why not delete it.

Just to double check, go into DM>Application Loader>Add/Remove Applications and be sure that they are not near the bottom of the list and just need to be checked. If not and as Mustang said, you did not separately back them up, you will need to re-download and install them.

You may also want to do a file search of your computer (use advanced feature) for a folder with your Pin number as its name and also for any files with xxx.alx extension.

Nope, all gone. Oh well. It only took me an hour to download all my apps. I had made some themes in plazmic that are gone now. Thats a bummer since I took quite some time on them.

After you downloaded the OS, did you double click on it to install it on your computer? You can verify by looking here:
Program Files/Common Files/Reseach in Motion/Shared/Loader Files and then you should see a folder for the 141 OS.

If you did not install it, then do that and then try again.

I hope you have backed up your data and third party apps using DM. If not, please do that first.

Rather than use DM to load the OS try using this, I find it works better:

    Program Files/Common Files/Reseach in Motion/AppLoader
Then delete the Vendor file near the bottom of the list
Then go up the list of files to the Loader.exe file and double click it.

Sorry to hear that. I suggest doing a backup once everything is installed. You can search and find out how to do a third party app backup. I would do backup's on some type of routine basis just in case, maybe every two weeks.

    Good luck.

Sorry I did not respond sooner, my wife is out of town hoping to be present when our second grandchild is born and I am serving a primary care giver for her parents (92 and 95). Enough said.

Are there any other OS's showing in the Loader Files folder? What operating system are you running on your PC? What version of DM are you using and do you have it closed when you try to use Loader.exe?

Similar questions as I had for dlovell,

I had this problem, too, but finally got "the one's" .141/5.0 hybrid DLd onto my Storm -- even modified It a bit to my liking. I pretty much followed the directiobs but the DM and apploader would telle "no further action required. I did what others on this thread have suggested you do and still got the same results. Finally I had to take some perhaps counterintuitive measures and got it to work.

One difference between our situations is I downgraded off .132 to .113, then back up to a hybrid.

No doubt someone with a lot more computer savvy will take me to task but here's what worked for me. I am using a 64 bit vista system and found that for whatever reason (likely user error) there were seemingly duplicate OS files for all saved OSs --one in the x86 path and one in the x64 path. So I overwrote both OS files per the instructions, fired up DM, and achieved success.

If this is of any help to you I'd love to know. I'd be happy to elaborate on the paths and steps I took, but am using the storm now and would rather be at my laptop.

I would love you to give more elaborate information because I have tried on a Vista Machine and XP and I have deleted the other OS's and the vendor file and I do not have the OS yet I will be waiting on a response. Thanks.
