unable to upgrade 9500 to v5.0.0.484

I got a Blackberry storm (as a gift) about an year ago. I used it for a few months in India, but got so pained by vagaries of it's touch screen (some clicks won't register, screen would freeze, some parts of the screen will be permanently disabled - all requiring me to take out the batter), that I abandoned it for a few months.

I thought of reviving it again, this time again on Vodafone India without Blackberry service. I am hoping that OS upgrades will make it a better experience. My earlier version OS was v4.7.0.148 - I upgraded it to v4.7.0.181, with marginal improvements. I'll like to try v5.0.0.484 - I downloaded it from Blackberry's website, and after removing the vendor.xml file, tried installing it with my blackberry Desktop 6. The install worked - howeer, my OS version still remains v4.7.0.181 - attempts to upgrade it from the desktop give the following:
- v5.0.0.484 doesn't show up when I try to upgrade the device
- when i try to see the available versions, i do see v5.0.0.841 and v5.0.0.451 - but they are available only to active blackberry service subscribers
- I tried installing directly from AppLoader/Loader.exe - but the Blackberry .ilx files belonging to the v5.0.0.484 don't seem compatible

This gets me to a few questions:
- can I download v5.0.0.x (any of v5 OS) on my Blackberry storm not released from my carrier, and without blackberry service. If so, how?
- I am about to try the leaked version v5.0.0.484 as opposed to the one on Blackberry's site. Do you think that'll help?

Have you deleted the Vendor file? If not, on your computer go to:

Program Files/Common Files/Research in Motion/AppLoader

and then delete the Vendor file. Once deleted try installing by double clicking on the Loader.exe file in the same folder.
