Question Storm 2 = No OS update for Storm 1?

Has anyone ever thought that because of the blackberry storm 2 release right around the corner, that that current storm if on verizon will not get updated? Just wondering?

Well, it is not speculation. The Storm 2 or whatever you want to call it is in the works. It's been confirmed by RIM's CEO.

Being confirmed and release right around the corner are polar opposites.

I don't really think so... I mean, they were (are) still updating 8xxx series phones while they were developing the Storm. I don't think they will stop supporting the Storm for the Storm II.

If by "around the corner" you mean the distance from St. Louis to Tahiti... then yes, the Storm 2 is right around the corner.

The Storm 1 will be updated. Like I've speculated countless times, it would be suicide for Verizon if they didn't support RIM's latest and greatest BES for all the devices they carry that qualify for an upgrade to 5.0 (the Storm def qualifies).

We will get an OS release to try and keep up when iPhone release 3.0

That will be way before Storm2 launches.

Who just happens to be the Largest carrier in the US who is making a heck of a push to get more of the Corporate market.

To imply that Verizon would drag their feet in making devices compatible with the needs of big business is laughable, and would be idiotic on VZW's part.

Verizon WILL update their devices to 5.0.

Wouldnt surprise me, and Ive said that on this forum before, and got blasted for it. (VW actually did this on a previous phone I had, they didnt release the WinMobile update for it, the only way to get the upgrade was to buy a new phone).

People dont want to believe that this is a possibility, and many are convinced that VW is going to release an upgrade within weeks, even though we have heard this story for months now.

    We'll see ...........

I find it hilarious that people even talk about the Storm 2. The fact that there is next to NO information about this phone means that it's at the VERY least 2-3 quarters away from release. If someone really thinks that we'll go 6-9 months without an "official" update, then just change your phone. These threads are ridiculous.

Radio confirmed that VzW had a new OS for the storm "certified and ready to go".

Where its at, and why they are withholding it, is anybody's guess.

We have gone 5 months (as of today) without an official OS update. The Storm 2 may be in development, but I seriously doubt it's released before the holidays. RIM's CEO has confirmed it's existence, but has not expanded on that any further. Anything more is speculation.

    Let's put it this way...

If Storm owners do not get OS updates, then we should all automatically get a free Storm 2 because we got stuck with a crappy release. I'm in favor of that plan!

I hope you are right, but it was a very similar situation, VW wouldnt give us the OS update that was available by MicroSoft. VW decided to include the new OS on new phones only. Why do you think that VW would treat the BB OS differently than the Microsoft OS?

Poor comparison, that's apple to oranges.

It's remarkably simple, yet people can't seem to understand it.

In order to take advantage of a number of new features in BES 5.0, the phones MUST be running OS 5.0. There is no debate, it's a fact.

BES 5.0, aside from adding some slick features for phones, really makes dealing with the server side of things a lot more IT guy friendly, so Admins are going to want to upgrade.

BES isn't something the Carriers control, so corporations can roll out BES 5.0 on their own time, which is going to begin happening.

The phone OS IS something the Carriers control, so corps have to wait for OS authorization from carriers before they can push it to their users.

If Verizon did not release 5.0 support for existing phones, they would essentially force their corporate clientele to dump their current handsets and switch to a device that shipped with 5.0.

Currently, the only phone that MIGHT release with 5.0 is the 9630. That would give Verizon ONE phone that would support BES 5.0 with no other devices slated to ship with 5.0 for the remainder of the year.

I can't think of any corporation that would be ok with having to buy thousands of new handsets and not having any kind of variety to the selection when they want to upgrade their BES server(s).

This would be suicide for VZW, and is completely illogical to even think is an option with them.
