Exclamation Side by side comparison of .75 and .113

Afternoon everyone. I DL the Storm 9530 .113 OS last night and while it wasn't as smooth an install as some of the other OS leaks, I got the job done. My girlfriend has a Storm 9530 with OS .75, so I did a side by side test on a few key things and I think you will be interested to know that:

Accelerometer: while in most cases the .113 beat the .75 in screen changes... it was not always the case. the the .75 OS may take a little longer, but it is consisitent whereas the .113 would occassionally take "buggy" long to change.

Browser: This was probably the most disappointing for the .113. While the side by side showed that the .113 got off to a fast start, it did not ultimately finish loading the page any faster than the .75. I tried this a few times and this was always the case surprisingly.

Screen lock: again, the .75 and the .113 had little to no difference in the amount of time that they go into and come out of the screen lock. Im some cases the .75 actually won this race.

Keyboard: This area the .113 did prevail, mostly by personal opinion. I think the typing seems more accurate with the .113 from making mistakes. I also like the green circled "go" button when entering websites. No real difference in making the keyboard appear/disappear.

Media files: They seem to load a bit smoother on .113. Still slower than they should be for large picture folders, but okay. There is an annoying downside to .113 on streaming videos... you cannot open a video link, it makes you download the video or it will not work. i.e. on Poynt watching movie trailers. this works fine on .75.

Memory: While I've read good things on memory leaks for .113 OS, I'm sitting around 20MB of available space on the App memory. My g/f's .75 is in the 30's. I will say that she has a few less applications, but we are close to the same. the .113 does vary by about +-3 MB depending on each restart.

Overall System: The speed of changing between, opening applications, scrolling, and overall cleanliness of .113 is somewhat improved over .75 but it is "barely" noticable. Not what you would expect from 5 beta versions later.

I'm of the overall opinion that the Storm 9530 is still a ways yet from where it should be from software perspective (it's a well-built, sexy piece of harware).

My hope is that this is NOT going to be the offical OS released by Verizon. And for God's sake, please bring us the flick scroll... my thumb is getting a workout on this system.

With all of the above said, here are a couple of coll new features/improvements i've noticed on the .113:

1. Cool new editing feature with a box you can drag your finger along. Makes it much easier to select and edit.
2. Camera shutter time is much improved (by about a whole second). The caviat here is that when the flash is in use it still does take a while.
3. The screen angle stays in portrait when laid flat.

Hope someone finds this helpful!

Peace!

Any data extracted from a test done within the first 48 hrs of having a new OS loaded should be tossed out. After a couple of battery pulls and battery cycles you can start looking at how the OS performs.

If you wanted to actually compare the two OS's you would need to

1) load the same apps/settings on to both phones (1 badly coded app can change the performance of the phone drastically) as can differences in settings (i.e. having memory cleaning enabled on one would make any lock/unlock test irrellevent)

2) make sure both are rebooted and fully charged before any testing is done

3) do the test with an impartial 2nd party who is "blind" to the differences in the phones and to which phone is which.

4) swap OS's from phone to phone and repeat the tests (I KNOW no one is going to do this, but without this step any and ALL differences can be attributed to HW not SW.)

Honestly, without proper scientific method, ALL of these types of posts are not useful.

I know your intent was to be helpful, but it is becoming very difficult to find any actual information in these forums.

This is in .75 too. Maybe they changed what it uses to start, but on .75 if you hold your finger on the text (don't click), after a second the input line thing will change to a movable box.

The reason why you don't have a noticeable difference is because your memory is sitting at 20-30mb lol......Everyone else is sitting at 45-55

I have few applications. Just what the phone came with. How does one get 45 to 55mb. On a reboot i get 40mb and it quickly goes to about 27mb and thats closeing applications. If anyone knows how to restore memory let me know. Running .113 Without doing a battery pull.

its nowhere near the same... not even close to friendly in .75

In .113, you can take your finger off the screen and the box is still there, so you can keep making adjustments. The copy/paste in .75 (and all other versions before .113) were clunky and difficult.
While the new version isn't perfect, its miles ahead.

Default Much better for me!

I upgraded to .113 the other night and must say I am very satisfied. Even with the .75 upgrade my 'Berry was rebooting itself atleast daily. Now I haven't had one reboot since going to 113.

I have noticed some advancements such as the "box around the editing cursor" that I did not have before as well as the opaque bar at the bottom of the camera screen and faster camera response. These are nice changes that most people will appreciate and show that the device is much more capable than it appeared to be at its release (IMO).

Hopefully we will see an official release soon.

Removing the sample pics, vid, languages, voice dialing etc. will get you some more memory.

Crackmem will do the grunt work for you (needs to be run BEFORE installing the OS.)

In general, though, as long as you are in the 20's you will not see any performance degradation.
