Everyone is a noob at this at some point in their life. First things first: install the Desktop Manager software that came with the phone, or do a google search for the latest Desktop Manager and install that. Once that install is completed, click to installl the OS you downloaded.
Next after making sure you have Desktop Manager (DM) and the OS installed to your computer, start up DM and plug in your phone. You are going to want to make a back up of all your info so click that and save that file to your computer.
After your backup has been made exit out of DM and go to this location on your pc: C:/ Program files/ common files/ research in motion/apploader
Look for a program called Loader.exe and start that. If your phone is connected to your PC still you should see your device pin and click next and follow the steps on screen. To verify the OS you can click the modules tab to make sure they all say what OS version you want to install, but it should give you a choice in the beginning. Let the program do its thing and leave the phone alone, it could take 20-40 minutes to do an upgrade. Once the phone turns completly back on you are good to go and installed a leaked OS.
To restore your settings and contacts restart DM and instead of backing up the device you want to click restore and choose the save you made earlier. Hope that helps, I'm typing at work so the file path may not be 100 percent but it should be pretty close, you may have to enable hidden folders on your pc as common files is usually hidden buy default.
