Not to be argumentative, but your post history indicates that you have recently gone from telling people that you do a wipe every time and that it helps with getting clean installs to this explanation. What prompted the change in opinion?

First thing's first. Download the OS and then:

1: Install to your PC. You probably have at least one other OS already installed on your PC. Go to your control panel, look at installed programs, and uninstall all of the "Blackberry storm device software" entries except for the one you want to load right now. Having more than one installed can mess things up, they must go. Make sure you don't delete "Blackberry Desktop software." It looks similar and is right before the OS' on the list. That's the DM, you kinda need that!
What do you do if you can't find the OS on your PC. I am running Windows 7 and all I see in Control Panel is DM 5.01 and BB Media Sync. No OS programs are listed. So, how do I delete my current version (which is 0.328)?

Was .328 installed on your device when you purchased it? If you've never downloaded/upgraded your device OS from a prior version, you won't have any prior versions to delete..

And a couple of quick comments about the tutorial:
Good breakdown for those new to installing/upgrading their OS. I followed a similar process (see link in my sig) for quite a while, then I realized much of what I was doing is, in fact, automated now in the install process.

For example, wiping. As C_X said, it's redundant as loader perform its own wipe. Backing up 3rd party apps: again, loader now backs up and reloads 3rd party apps when you upgrade. Disconnecting from the internet: using SAOS and loader there's no need for this in my experience.

This isn't intended to be critical; just got to the point that I realized I achieved identical results in a 20 minute upgrade as I was spending 90 minutes on it. In the interest of time, and not sacrificing, I found shortcuts.

Again, nice write up.

I upgraded to .328 through DM. So, is it embedded somewhere in DM?

Default I like this guide

Was a catalyst in helping to more fully understand the software architecture. It actually helped me figure out a long-standing issue with a 9530 I've been fighting with. Thank you immensely for this.
