Basic - How do you wipe and re install the OS

Have lost the folder with SMS and MMS in it.
Getting: Start up error with uncaught exception java.null.error.

Searches seem to indicate the need to wipe and re install the OS.

Just the basic steps needed to accomplish this action.

It's a 9530 running on T-Mobile that I set up a long time ago and it's worked great till now. Have latest Desktop Manager if it matters.
