They have a watered-down (but still useful) free version now, yes.

I'm using the free version currently, and I LOVE IT!!! That's in my top 5 of necessary and useful BB apps. I had really no use for the functions that require payment anyway, since I back up with DM all the time. But the remote wipe, lock, help me, tracking, and locator functions are endlessly useful!! And with their newest update, they added password protection to the program to complete the security. 5 Stars!! =)

It's not watered-down. Every option is there except remote backup.

so if it does do remote backup, does it just save to SD card instead?

Unfortunately no. The purpose of the remote backup/restore is so you can retrieve your data if the device is lost or stolen.

Isn't that why you have the back up feature on the BB desk top?? Same thing no?

But that would require you to constantly connect your BB to your PC via USB and backup. And if your last backup was two weeks ago, and you lost your phone today, that is two weeks of data "lost"

SmrtGuard does its backup wirelessly. So its more current, and you don't have to connect to backup.

That being said, without SmrtGuard everything on the MicroSD card (my pictures and videos taken with the camera) and browser book marks are the only things I'd really "loose" if I lost my personal blackberry....

How is all that stuff you can do for FREE 'pretty blah'? Wow if your expectations of a free app are that high, I'd like to see what you expect your paid apps to do!

I haven't used Google Sync personally, so don't yell at me, but from what I understand, it will also remotely back up your contacts and calendar entries, no? And it is also free, so that in combination with SmrtGuard free would complete the package. And, yes, I understand the appeal of having it all in one self-contained app.

I had GMail set to sync my contacts wirelessly for a while, and it worked nicely, but I really prefer doing it on the computer with the DM, so I can edit them in Outlook.

I had SmrtGuard free downloaded for a while, but I'm letting .517 settle for a couple days before I reinstall my 3rd party apps. Otherwise a very handy app. I use it mostly for the remote tracking and wipe features.

Gmail sync via app or BIS is OK i think if you can get it to work. I had the problem when i tried using i t with the 2-3 copies of all the contacts and such though. I have always preferred and used the outlook and DM method and never had an issue. which i continue to use. I also dont have gmail as my primary email. Overall i have never had to or want to actually use smrtguard but its worth the 22.xx that i paid for a year.

Why did this get moved to Storm 9530 third party apps? Seems kind of silly since there are MANY threads about 3rd party apps in the S2 section?

And I see your point, Matt. SmrtGuard is still very handy, despite not having the remote backup and restore functions. If for nothing other than the security of being able to wipe the device remotely. I have a lot of phone numbers in my phone that would be bad if they got in the wrong hands. So password protect it and use SmrtGuard for extra safety.
