Default pattern lock issue

With pattern lock, I want the lock to be active instantly once I press the lock button, but not instantly once the backlight goes on. I would like it to go on after like a couple minutes of inactivity. What options do I need selected for this? It seems like the option for how long it takes to activate is the same, locked or not.

Default options settings

Go into options, choose pattern lock, scroll down to the section that says autolock, and choose the time you want from the drop down many that says "after backlight turns off"

Yeah but if I select say, 30 seconds, it takes 30 seconds to activate from when I actually push the lock button. I want that to be instant.

if you have it set to use the blackberry lock key as the key to enable pattern lock it will take a little to activate and wont be instant. If you want something that will do it instantly click on the Pattern Lock icon, or assign a convenience key. This will solve your problem. As for time frame of enabling automatically when screen goes dim, this option is in the settings of pattern lock.
