does anyone know if Garmin lets you update the maps for free if you pay for the one time fee?

i have a feeling it just uses the most recent maps.

It doesnt actually download the maps onto your device, it streams the data to your phone. Thats why it requires you to have a data plan.

I could be completely wrong though.

agreed with above post. It uses maps online. that is why they have traffic updates on it
