Default Un-Activated phone receiving SMS?!

So I was playing around with my un-activated HTC Hero last night. I usually leave it in airplane mode, and turn on wifi to play on the internet, etc. I discovered that for some reason the phone wont connect to the Android Market if its in airplane mode (even with wifi on) so whenever I update my apps I have to turn off airplane mode for a few minutes. Well, while playing with the phone last night I sent my friend a text message from my ACTIVATED Style and I got his response on the Hero! WTF? I tried responding from the Hero and it failed (as it should) but then I tried to send the response from the Style and it wouldn't go through either. I finally updated the profile and did a battery pull on the Style and all was working again. Any ideas how this could happen? I wonder if this has happened to anyone else or if anyone is curious if they could try to recreate this?

I've just had a similar situation and it has turned into a nightmare.

I have an Evo from a brief love affair a few months ago. About 2 weeks ago I formatted it so I could sell it. Starting that day I started getting texts from 9016 stating I had an android visual voice mail. The phone had internet connectivity via WIFI for just minutes till I noticed it was on after the formatting.

I called and asked them what it was and since I didn't have an android phone active on my account, or visual voice mail could they block them.

Even after reboots, battery pulls, reprogramming of both phones and hours and hours on the phone with countless Sprint Dis-service reps the problems persist from the countless harebrained actions of the Sprint reps.

If one could recall where this setting was, you would probably just be able to set it to a false address.
This makes sense to a degree, but the phone is deactivated. I have had several phones over the past few years where I've done the same thing (used them for internet with wifi and have never had this issue). All of the phones I have done this with have previously been activated on my account, so if I were to look at the phones info, it always shows my phone number and the same mdn/msid? Whenever Ive had to call Sprint to re-activate a phone, they've always told me to go into these settings and change the #'s, but the #'s have always been the same as what was previously there and I never had to touch this. Maybe I should call Sprint? That or I guess I can always do a battery pull on the Style if I have to update the Hero haha

I'm not quite sure I'm following you here, but it sounds like you had (a similar) but different problem.
