Default Sprint and WiFi calling on the 9930 once 7.1 is here?

Now that WiFI calling seems confirmed with 7.1, I wonder whether wifi calling will be limited to T-Mo in the US as was UMA (with one unimportant exception) or whether say Sprint will also have WiFI calling. I also wonder whether WiFi calling will work from abroad in the same manner as did UMA.

Any of you gurus know?

For some reason, I recall that wifi calling is strictly a GSM thing, but I may be mistaken.

UMA is a technique specific to GSM.. any type of wifi calling would require VoIP such as skype.. and BB are noted for not having skype..

I suspect given how voice calls are transported over a 4G LTE network that a seamless wifi>cellular handoff will be a part of the network architecture in the future for Sprint..but i suspect that is a 2013 type of timeframe

until then keep looking for voip apps.. (though i keep waiting)

UMA calling over WiFi has to be supported by Sprint to work, and so far Sprint doesn't support it. I think my 9650 is capable of UMA calling, surprised the 9930 isn't.

UMA is only for GSM, GPRS and UMTS as noted above.

And only TMobile and Cincinnati Bell have a license to it in the US.

Because UMA and WiFi calling are NOT the same thing, my hope is that Sprint might introduce WiFi calling for this BB once the phone supports it. Do Aneroid devices have WiFi calling from carriers other than TMo? If so, there is hope.

Would it be in Sprint's interest to institute wifi calls or not?

On the one hand it would reduce network load, on the other hand it would decrease minute overage charges.

I think so.

It should free up bandwidth on the network since people will be utilizing their wifi (which is provided by another company) to make the call, yet the cell phone company can still charge the customer for those minutes.

I have a 9650 as well and I know that i am not able to make calls over wifi. I know i can surf the web and recieve emails/text/bbm while i am in my wifi network. I still believe that the voice is being done over the network and the other things over wifi.

Sprint would be wise from a competitive angle to implement WiFi calling. But they do not listen to me!

You forget that we are just lowly users. our wants really dont matter to them. If it gives them another way to make money then they will do it, but considering there are other carriers that offer it free of charge(i think) they would get crucified if they charged for it.

Meistro, check out the section "Wi-Fi at your service"
BlackBerry - Bold Smartphones - New BlackBerry Bold 9780 and 9650, 9700 & 9000
I didn't say I could use UMA/ Wi-Fi calling, just that the 9650 is capable of it.

I understand that it is capable but sprint has to impliment the updates to the software to allow it to work. I dont think they will do that out of the kindness of their heart, we will end up having to pay for it.

sprint has voice call continuity coming in the future. i left sprint for tmo because i wanted uma. if sprint can match uma with their feature i will be back on sprint.
