Default Sprint may be charging for the Playbook Bridge!!!

Sprint charging for BlackBerry PlayBook tethering?! | CrackBerry.com

Yes the the poster is implying that you will need to pay $30 per month for the tether AND the bridge to work. I can see a tethering fee but if they block the bridge without the fee then that is final nail in the Sprint coffin for my money. Hopefully this will be clarified today in an update but the wording on the document seems pretty clear to me!

That's ludicrous, and would likely incur a class action lawsuit akin to the one against Verizon for locking out Bluetooth on their early devices via firmware.

Anyone who thought they wouldn't charge for this was kidding themselves.

To clarify, they MAY be charging for tethering. They can't block Bridge, that has nothing to do with the mobile network.

They are two separate functions.

They can't charge for the bridge as it has nothing to do with their wireless service. But then again they all try to charge for every little thing they can. Now data is a different subject.

Your blackberry features are controlled by service books so in theory then can restrict your bb from using bridge. I really think they messed up the wording and they meant tethering and not bridge.

This 'rumor' is that google is doing it. Not the carriers. I for one would be disappointed but would not be surprised if/when it happens.

Ya I came across rumor a couple months ago & freaked lol

But no Google is leaning that way to clean up fragmentation & carries abusing them - Verizon for example , they pulled Google search out adding Bing.
Will they lock us out?...I think not but do think they will crack down on carriers & manufacturers adding a bunch of extras.
From that point development freedom lives on boot loaders cracked etc

They are not going to be charging to bridge your device. Bridging and tethering are two separate things. Sprint will be charging the $29.99/month to use the tethering on your phone to connect your Playbook to the internet. The soc code for the tethering gets attached to your handsets line, and allows the device to tether data via Bluetooth. The Playbook itself does not get directly attached to your account as a line or device. It is considered an accessory and is treated as one.

As for Android, Blackberry will allow Android game/app developers to submit there app to Blackberry (free of charge) so they can review it, and determine if it meets there security standards. If it passes the app will then be placed in the Blackberry App World. The Android Market will not be on the Playbook.

I'll update carriers before switching over to Android and that fiasco called WiMax. I work with technology every day at work and have reached the point in my life where I'd rather do fun things in my free time and not be tinkering with phones and computers. Sprint's pretty much priced itself up to and over the competition on family plans and I don't see that they have a coherent path forward (WiMax and Clear is a disaster) to justify dumping another two years in them.
