Default Sprint charges $10 for add'l data w/out renewing

So I just got a new HTC Design outside of Sprint paying retail and when I activated on Sprint they charged me the additional $10 premium data even though I did not renew the contract. They claim it is a policy change started in February but I was never notified. This pisses me off. The whole reason why I got the phone from another source was so that I do not get charged with the additional data charge.

Yeah that happened to me too. I went to Sprint, payed full price for a Bold 9930, they added on the $10 fee plus an activation fee. Couldn't these be waived considering I just gave the $500 for a bloody phone!
Oh well, love my bloody phone When BB 10 hits I can upgrade with the contract discount then I suppose...

It was sent out via your bill of the changes. I never noticed it until someone on here was complaining about it and I looked back at my ebill and there it was.

Even if you get an insurance swap out for a newer phone you are required to pay it.

That is correct. If you had a non-4G phone prior to January 31, 2011 the only way to avoid the $10 "Premium Data" fee when switching phones to replace it through Total Equipment Protection insurance.

Correct but now if you get a replacement you get dinged with the fee 4G or not.

when the premium data fee first arrived for more than 4G phones they said it was only on new and upgrade customers. as of about 2-3 months ago (i believe) they have gone back on their word and started charging every swap, insurance or not.

Premium data add on is added onto ANY ESN of any smart phone upon activation. I've had customers come in to activate EVOs, and other 4G (or non 4G) devices that were smart phones that they got (from friends, a third party, etc) and educated them that the $10 will apply if it's tacked onto their account. It's unavoidable.

You can usually avoid this charge if you got your device through a service and repair exchange (like let's say you had a Bold 9650 on your account BEFORE the $10 add on was introduced, it broke, and a tech ordered you/replaced it for you ont he spot with a new one) if you tell Care that it's a service and repair swap, they will not add on that $10. Usually my system will prompt me to add it on, but I call up to have them re-add the $0 add on so the customer does not get charged.

The $10 additional charge should be waived for BB owners. Having a BB and Droid on my bill and knowing the BB being the heaviest user, the contrast in data usage is incredible. The Droid clock in with usage in the millions and the BB always in the thousands. Stark contrast...not that I mind while on an Unlimited plan but I don't see why BB users have to share the cost of heavy Droid data usage.

Why do people keep thinking it is a 4g fee. It is a smart phone fee . There is no getting around it. It has been that way for over a year now. I had it when I Had the HTC Arrive and the 8350i.

I can tell you why buddy, When sprint first charged the 10 bucks it WAS a 4G add on ONLY for the 4G phones then one year later it went to all smartphones and they took away the rewards programs, they say thats how they can keep the unlimited but slow data.

I've been with Sprint for 15 years, I already know the whole story.
