Question paying full for a new bberry 9930 vs using upgrade?

Not sure what to do. I realized that paying the full $500 price for the 9930 vs saving the $300 using the upgrade actually equals out. that's cause if i want to save the $150 on the upgrade (plus the other $150 in online savings) i'd have to change my plan. Currently i have the everything 900 plan which i got before you had to pay an extra $10 per month for smartphones. So to use the upgrade, i'd have to sign a new 2yr contract which would then add that $10 (x24months = $240). And it will always be on there for the life of my account so that's even more $$ past the contract period.

Does anyone know if I pay full price and then try to activate the phone, will sprint still make me add that monthly fee to my account? or would my account stay grandfathered in month to month with no changes after activating the new device?

Regardless whether you pay full price or not you have to pay the premium data add-on if you are going to purchase the phone or you will not be able to activate it.

You guys shouldnt complain...cuz at the end of the day with Sprint you get more for your money. Regardless if the $10 fee...which i pay $20 since i have 2 lines...i still pay less on Sprint. I saved my upgrade for "QNX" berry in 2012-2013 and paid full price for my 9930. Ofcourse i sold my bold 9650 for $150 and an old 8530 for $50...at the end the 9930 cost me $335.00. fyi...ive been with sprint for 7 years. what worries me now is sprint getting the iphone..im worried they can remove unlimited data

I'm going to complain. I have 4 Blackberry phones on my plan so if I upgrade all of them my monthly rate will be $40 more per month, and cost the same as AT&T. With a Blackberry I don't need unlimited data, and only use about 250 MB per month per phone. Not only that but the new phones are still CDMA so I'm getting nothing more from the network for that extra money. They'll go to tiered soon enough and I bet the basement will be what the unlimited is now.

Are you saying you have a smartphone currently with your "old" plan that doesn't charge the $10 premium? (Or do you have a non-smartphone?) That might be relevant info.

If they have not activated a new phone since the premium data add on was added to the contracts, they will be grandfathered in until they sign a new contract.

Yeah it is awful for the family plan with lots of smart phones. I would gladly stay with Sprint if they changed the Family plans to tiered and made the prices more reasonable but if I have to pay AT&T pricing then I'll look at AT&T or get into T-Mobile for a lot less pre-merger and get grandfathered in for two years. Sad since I've been with Sprint for 10 years. I'll call them when I get back to states and talk to retentions and explain how this will lose my four lines, and the 3 lines of my wife's family as they'll switch to where we do.

yup same boat. 3 blackberries and if i upgrade i have to pay 30 smackers more a month.
i am holding off because if i do go that route like previous posters said it would be about the same price for att. i would get more coverage nationwide but i wouldnt be able to always use it.

and for the second part, i am also worried about the iphone dropping. if sprint drops unlimited data i will never upgrade my plan. ill stick it out on my 9650 for as long as i can. i use about 4-6gb a month because i stream pandora in my truck 10 hours a day.

As long as u don't renew your contract you won't get charged the extra $10, I ordered my new BB off eBay and activated it online without changing my plan

when did you do this though. it was different before but now the only way you can get a new smartphone on the list without getting the upgraded fees is if someone puts it in as a insurance swap.

This is misinformation, if you add ANY SMARTPHONE to your plan after Jan 31st 2011 you will have to pay the $10 premium data addon regardless of weather you are signing a new contract or not
