Default $10 Fee Will Apply to Swaping Phones

Just got this email, it sounds like the $10 fee will also apply if you have multiple phones and want to swap them... Sucks for those who switch between multiple phones.

Newly required $10 Monthly Premium Data Add-on available online

Effective January 30, Sprint will require a $10 per month Premium Data Add-on when performing an activation or swap to a Sprint Smartphone. Some business customers may qualify for a $0 Premium Data Add-on depending on their business contract. We have updated our online tools to reflect the new $10 Premium Data Add-on charge feature codes required when activating or upgrading to a Smartphone.

Sprint defines smartphones as devices with robust operating systems that deliver a rich wireless experience by bringing the full function of mobile applications and programs to life, including Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile, Palm, and the Instinct family of devices.

The process to manage these devices online won’t change; we’ll simply make the Premium Data Add-on available for you to select:

Swap to a Smartphone on My Sprint Business

Activating a new Smartphone on Enhanced Account Management

Upgrading to a Smartphone on Enhanced Account Management

Placing Smartphone on Seasonal Standby plan on Enhanced Account Management

If you have any questions on this process or which code to select, please contact your Dedicated Care Specialist.

Sincerely,

My Sprint Business Tool Support Group

Red face

The only thing that won't be effected is if you get a warranty replacement or an insurance replacement. You won't pay a $10 fee then.

There are several other threads about this also, just FTR.

I'm not sure why swapping devices would cause this fee to kick in. I understand new activations and new lines. But, if you already have a couple phones then I'm not sure what the big deal is.

It's that they can't start adding $10 to everyones without giving us warning and then us making a change to the account. So in an effort to get more people onto the $10 add-on they make something simple like a phone swap do it too.

Can someone explain this in layman's terms? Does this apply to new customers? Will it apply in two years when I upgrade and get a new phone?

Yes, it will apply 2 new and old customers when u purchase or swap a smartphone ONLY! Even if u have a smart phone and want to do a simple upgrade to a smartphone although u have 1.

I don't understand how they can do that without violating the current contract. Granted I don't plan on getting a new phone for a while so no big deal here.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, the Everything Unlimited plan will now essentially be 79.99 instead of 69.99?

I was convinced of a switch to Sprint but this is making me rethink. This has a Verizon-type stench to it.

Yes. They are adding $10 to every smartphone line or change (like a smartphone pack). Verizon adds $30.

Maybe a more important question for BlackBerry loyal users, with the dearth of 4G Blackberries, what does this do to Blackberry's market share with Sprint?
