A warning and a testimony
Firstly, let me just say that I am very satisfied with Sprint after they were able to address my problem by giving an honest and loyal customer a 'break'.
Three months ago my wife and I purchased Tour 9630 World Phones. The ability for her to use the phone in her country when visiting also influenced the decision. So 15 days ago, as per the sales reps instructions, I contacted Sprint International to activate international services for my wife's trip to Poland. I was explained the rates for international services and I gave the green light for activation. However, I declined the monthly international plan as my wife would only be in Poland for 10 days.
Off my wife went to Poland. I spoke with her on the phone for a total of 12 minutes and used bbm often, thinking that it was cheaper than voice calls.
I checked my charges today with voice =$30.00 and bbm'd pictures/chat for a total of 17,000kb = ($285.00). For 10 days of service, we were set to pay about $315 on top of the monthly $180 we pay stateside.
I immediately hopped on Sprint chat and expressed my concern over the very high charges. Unfortunately, I was told by the account rep that the charges were very valid. However, when I was presented the intl monthly plan, I was told it was $4.99 per month, to have the voice rates reduced from 2.99 to 2.49. (Why would I pay 4.99, to save 50 cents a minute, when wifey would only use the phone to call me if she needed something?)
The account rep forwarded me a link to Int'l services where I spoke to a super nice rep. She also explained to me that according to the transcript, I denied the Int'l monthly plan rate for voice=4.99per month, along with free data for an additional $40.00 per month. I acknowledged that I did decline services, however they were not explained in the manner she described. Fortuntately she was able to back date the free data for $40.00 and then pro-rate it and then apply the voice usage.
When all is said and done, I am paying $34.00 for the 10 days of usage compared to $315. What everyone should be careful of, especially if you are going international, is to get the proper plan. (and then ask the rep. if this is the right plan for your situation)
A big thanks to Sprint for handling my situation! A+ - 11-05-2009, 07:12 PM #2
It's well known that data abroad will coast an arm and a leg if you don't have an international data plan or use a local sim card while abroad. A high-five goes out to Sprint who was willing to do you a favor instead of pursuing the charges that you are legally bound to.

I think the Trojan is exaggerating his point a fair bit. Its unfortunate that the salesman wasn't clearer, and I'm glad it turned out well for you. My experience with sprint (on the phone) has shown the same sort of deference to the customers word.
