Interesting call from sprint...Anyone else?
I received an interesting call from sprint today. The cs stated they wanted to discuss my roaming minutes. She proceeded to go over how many roaming minutes I had in the previous three months. Finally she got to the point and said that per my service agreement that I was only allowed 800 mins a month that I may use roaming before I would be billed. I asked her how long this had been their policy and where this information was located on the agreement I signed and she said it was in the terms and conditions. I am on the Simply everything plan and I also told her that when I had first gotten my phone that I had noticed the roaming indicator and called in to make sure that there was not going to be any additional charges, and that cs told me that I did not have to worry that being on the SEP that the only thing I would be billed for additionally would be 411 or international calls, and I could use as many minutes I wanted no matter where in the US I was located.
Her reply was that she apologizes for the inconvenience but this has always been their policy and sprint had never enforced it, but were starting to enforce all of the policies in their Terms and conditions. She also said I had two options. 1. To stay with sprint which would be their preference and make sure I do not go over roaming. or 2. To port out of sprint to another network with no ETF, which they would hate to lose me..
I just found it odd that after 16 months of service they decide to call me. Anyone else received a call from them.? - 02-17-2010, 03:39 PM #2
A few people have, sprint is trending customers that are roaming due to the fact that these customers are costing more then they actually put in via thier MRC. Sprint acutally disconnected 2500 people , this is from the news feed we got at work, last year for the very same reason.

Are you only roaming at home? If so, ask Sprint to hook you up with an Airave.

That option has been part of the small print in the contract for some time now. I know that some people that have had connectivity issues have resolved part of this issue with an Airave device.

I had the exact same problem about two years ago. I had moved to a wooded area (within supposedly good coverage area according to Sprint)and my signal sucked, so I had to roam whenever I was at home. Like you, I also had SEP and one day received a call from Sprint cs about the roaming minutes and was told that they could cancel my contract for consistently going over 800 roaming minutes. I too was like... since when, but found it to be true when I read through the fine print of my contract.
I stopped roaming and put up with the dropped calls and terrible signal until my contract was up. At that point I told them I would leave if there was nothing they would do for me. I had been with them for about 9 years. They offered me the Airave for free and also waived the monthly charges. I was skeptical at first, but am so glad I accepted.
This resolved my issue entirely and the only time I ever have any trouble is when my internet connection goes down, which isn't very often. I would recommend this to anyone who is experiencing the same issues. - 02-17-2010, 06:05 PM #6
You are not the only one....there are several threads discussing this issue already.

Thanks for the replys everyone. Just kinda caught me off guard... I looked at the airave thing and spoke to a sprint rep about it. Unfortunately it wont work for me. Am on a sat connection here. Ah well. They did tell me when I called back about it that my roaming is all on the verizon network, and that the most I have roamed was 200 mins and average was 90 mins...That news made me feel somewhat better as I am not getting close to the 800, but found it odd that they called me in the first place since I am under the halfway mark. The oddest part was at the end of the conversation when I called back and got all this info was the agent telling me I might want to consider verizon. Makes one wonder.

Yeah because they are losing money by you roaming on Verizon. Sprint has to pay them everytime you roam on their network...they prob figure if you are doing that then you would be better off just having their service. Sounds crappy I know but if you are costing them $$ then they would be willing to let you go.

I never received a call from Sprint but like you I was roaming at home nearly all the time. Due to the fact that even while roaming our sevice was poor at home I called about an Airave. It was an hour long call with a rep that told me that my wife's Pre would not make any calls at all unless it was on the Sprint network. Long story short I got his supervisor on the line and got an Airave ordered along with a nice credit. The Airave works great and shows as Sprint PCS as my network. It has made all the difference in the world and allowed me to stay with Sprint.

my buddy had the Palm Treo 800...and after the hurricane hit Houston, I told him to put it on roam (since I also had the same phone then), well, he kept it on roam, and finally after several months to maybe a year after that, they called and told him he needs to stop using the roaming feature, and that his options would be to do that or they will let him break contract without ETF...he said ok, he'll take it off...then about sometimes towards the end of last year, he decided he wants an iphone...so he set his phone on roam again, and finally last month, they called him and offered him to break contract without ETF...he took it and now he has an iphone....they told him it costs them when he roams, so they let him out...they never said anything about him having to pay per minute...

Sprint
If they are going to allow you to Port Out without an ETF then its probably not in their service agreement. They would say that only if you were NOT under contract. Sounds like SPRINT needs to start enforcing these unseen service agreement stipulations due to the fact that they probably lost a lot of their roaming agreements with other carriers.

Hmmm, interesting stipulation they have there. When I signed into contract, they emphasized unlimited roaming but that was in early '07. Oh well. I never roam anyhow and when I do, I just shut my phone off an turn it back on. That usually fixes it. :/

But if you read the fine print, it's not unlimited, I think it was something like <85% of your plan minutes could be used while roaming.
At least that's what it was when I read mine around that same time. But I'm roaming at home, and use my phone a good bit at home, and I've never heard them complain. I'd gladly take a free Airave, but I'm not going to pay them a monthly fee to save them money. And they don't offer it 'in my area', which makes no sense at all. - 02-23-2010, 02:36 PM #18
it's alllll in the contract details guys..
