@ Mentions & DM Notifications

When I first installed SS, (I think!) I got the small blue circle above the '@' or envelope symbol to show I had a new mention or direct message, the same as the normal SS, Twitter or Facebook feeds.

Unfortunately after changing some settings (not sure which ones!) the blue circles have disapeared even though I have new mentions & direct messages.

Can anyone advise which settings I need to change to reinstate the blue circle notifications again? (Or was it my imagination, and I've never actually had these in the first place!?)

Any help would be appreciated!
