Can't argue with that, it's never a good thing when it takes a player being on the roster a couple years before anybody figures out how to pronounce his name...lol

Lol........

The one name that will always stand out in my mind, not because of the name itself, but the player........ Cam Neely. Done and done.

Never remind a Canucks fan about Cam Neely, ever .

Mind you over the years Vancouver has fleeced a few teams too - the Luongo and Naslund deals come to mind.

I wouldn't expect somebody who isn't familiar with the position to understand. Clearly you don't... Its funny though, making the goalies smaller so far has only made them faster and better. And ratings continue to slip. Maybe one day hockey big wigs will wake up and realize its not goalies killing the game. Yeah I'm talking to you Gary Bettman! Does anybody else absolutely hate that guy? Ever since he got in charge he has been killing the league. I mean come on, he put the league on Versus? Really?

Btw if you really want to see large pads check out the late 80's. Goalies were allowed to wear 15" wide pads! And guess what? Scoring was at an all time high! Its not the goalies that are the problem like I said...

Versus. What a joke.

Hey! Here's an idea! Let's go ahead and give some random, obscure sports network that 1 out of every 10 american households actually pays to have the exclusive rights to our league's playoff games! That'll boost interest and ratings!!

Yeah. Great thought guys.

I don't personally believe pads are single-handedly ruining the game, but it is a lot different from the old days. My great grandfather played for the rangers, among others, (its true. google search joe jerwa) and back then, they had nothing! I have his original uniform, and its little more than a sweater and tights!

Ahhh those were tough SOBs back then.

Caps fan here. I play in a mens league as well. Looking for a new team since I just moved here to DC. Hockey is alive and well here after the season the caps had.

For the most part I would agree that the NEW NHL is exactly what went wrong with the sport. But come on, some of these 'tenders pads look MUCH large than they should be. And I have it on pretty good faith, from a VERY well known NHL Allstar/future HOF'er, that some goalies are very cautiously and carefully employing questionable equipment.But...at the end of the day, it's easier to blame Bettman.

The goaltender position has also evolved quite a bit. I remember when we use to play hockey growing up, you'd always stick the least athletic kid in net - the guy who couldn't skate, shoot and could barely hold a stick.

Now goalies are so athletic. You see those French-Canadian and Finnish goalies who have basically perfected the butterfly style, making incredible saves and playing their angles well, giving guys nothing to shoot at. Then you have Marty Turco who plays the puck so well that opposing teams have to be smart about playing dump and chase.

The league really needs to get on ESPN. Even though I hate ESPN, cuz they shove NFL and MLB down your throat. The VS crap is unacceptable. The only good thing is they got rid of Gary Thorne.

ESPN won't pick hockey back up for a while. Not until the league gets its sh*t together. Waaaay too many cooks in the kitchen right now, if you ask me....

And I mean really, I would venture to say that the majority of Americans don't even understand or want to understand hockey enough to get it back into the mainstream. All I ever hear is "Wow the puck is so little and so fast, I can't even keep track of it! Why would I wanna watch this?" So I calmly explain that you watch the play, not the puck. "Oh." That's the only response I ever get. It's a novel concept for a nation that is obsessed with baseball, a sport where you really do watch the ball.......
