No special trick. Upload an image at or below the maximum parameters and save.

Second, what happens exactly when you try and change your avatar?

went through the instructions. I was able to originally change it from the default, but as you can see its blurry, so I wanted to change it to something a little better, but it will no longer let me. I get the passport screen, and I click the change avatar, it brings up a window that says I can click to upload a new image. I do that, it brings the image to the bottom, but does not allow me to bring it into the box.

I'm using Exploer 8

This seems to be a known issue for some in recent versions of IE. A fix is in the works. Should be resolved soon.

Thanks for the reports,

There is an issue that we're working on with IE and Avatars. It should be resolved soon. In the meantime Chrome, Safari, Opera and FF work perfectly.

I just wanted to add, using Opera 12, though maybe its just me has my avatar all screwed up.
To be clear I can upload, but crop and zoom features are broken for example.
