Signature Policy
I would just like to refresh some people to what is policy.... I was warned about my signature back in the day shortly after I joined.... Now I am seeing more and more signatures against this. Just saying if I have to follow it, then everyone else should as well.....
Signatures are allowed, and may contain one hyperlink, but should not be excessive in length nor contain any promotional text (enticing users to click). Traffic leaching will not be tolerated. A second signature link is acceptable, so long as it is pointing to a page within the CrackBerry.com site (favorite how to article, forum rules, etc.). Signatures should be small and tasteful and take up 1 - 4 lines max in the default font size (the last thing we want is to look at a forum thread and see 15 big signatures that take up all of the screen real estate). Moderators will determine what is acceptable or not.

Hence the reason I have mine formatted as it is...
I refer constantly to the links within my signature and have it formatted so that it is not obnoxiously long or disrupting to the flow of a thread
I honestly understand where you are coming from... but formatting my signature as it is and making an attempt to include useful information in a professional style take just as much space as your signature, while providing helpful information.
I can understand this policy when users jack up their font sizes and color, disrupting the flow of a thread and obnoxiously displaying some messages or links... but my signature does not bother the eyes or distract and can be used as a very handy resource

Bm, your sig is great and helpful. Fear not.

Well, I have a sig similar to that of Bmcclure. I do not see a problem with it. It has no information that pertains to my device, my job, what I like, what I do, etc. It is filled with useful information I regularly use to help members with. It makes for a quick response to help get members questions and problems resolved in a timely manner.
As far as the "rules" are concerned, I myself believe, the administrators are referring to signatures with with no informative value that take up lots of space and disrupt the flow of the thread. IMO. - 07-21-2008, 08:10 AM

I am not arguing the fact that you guys have them, I actually love it and would like to add some stuff to mine(links from this site) basically hot links... But since i was warned before I didn't want to make it look like I didn't listen.
I just want a response from an admin and I will feel better.....

I know what you are saying, and I have seen some signatures that are really distracting and obnoxious. I would rather fill mine with useful information, rather than my life motto or a quote. (No offense, seeing that you have a quote in yours)
Also, many people do not understand how to format their signature to make it look pleasany and presentable. I have seen signatures with a links... normal size font, no formatting, double spaced... resulting in a sig that takes up 6 lines or more

Perhaps you could add a link in your sig pointing to a sig formatting tutorial!...I have two links, but both refer to posts within the site, and so meet the strict interpretation of the rules. I like the way you and crucial have yours formatted. Your sigs add tremendous value. I hope this is not a case of asking the question forcing an answer we don't want...
- 07-21-2008, 08:39 AM #9
I could possibly make a tutorial on how to format your signature...
I would need to do this once I am home, because at work I do not have the time to whip up a tutorial!
And, if this does force an answer upon us that we do not want to hear... then I will promptly be talking to a mod or admin about the situation
And I am sure they will agree with me on the issue... those rules are set in place so people do not turn out with sigs such as :
BlackBerries are COOL man...

This is Kevin's house, and we are invited to hang out, he has the rules in place. if he approves of it, then cool. but what he has written up and what has been done. It's not right. Rules in place should be followed, not self used in interpretation..... Help with this site and multiple links are cool, but it would be put in the policy if it was allowed.

And it is ironic that you changed your signature after all of this... did you come to realize your sig was far more distracting that many of the ones you are accusing?

This thread is useless and you are bringing attention to something that really is not an issue. Some users have gaudy and obnoxious signatures, but pointing out that multiple links are not allowed and being a stickler is no fun.
I use each link in my signature to help someone on a daily basis... and I am sure Kevin will notify me if he finds my signature to be a violation of policy or offensive in any way...
He has those rules in place to prevent the things I have mentioned... pollution, distraction and diversion. And, it is not like the links within my signature are pointing to some other BlackBerry forum, random websties, etc...
I am not being self-righteous and interpreting the rules to meet my needs... I am making my signature a useful reference tool. This way, when I want to help someone I do not need to scour for the thread I want to use, or look in my subscribed threads. I have the links readily available and at hand
Do as you please... but let Kevin be the judge.

I agree completely with you... And I see no wrong doing in it at all, but there is something is place. yes it's worded vary plain but it's there... I was warned about my sig a long time ago. basically i had the same stuff in my sig plus a link to my fire company website. 1 link... so i removed it and took it down to three lines...
I removed my signature no because I came to realize. I am currently working on a signature my self. but waiting to get word if it's okay or not.....
I am not making this out the be a big deal, just everyone is saying "oh it's not that big of a deal... It's okay what I am doing...." Does that make it right.....
I have no problem with helping out on this forum. This place rocks and I want to make sure everyone is helped just like I would like help as well if I had a question.....
I don't think the thread is useless.... I got your attention, and I am not calling you personally out at all.... I am just making a point.... If you or anyone else is allowed to speed and not get a ticket, then I and others should be able to as well.
But I also completely agree with not allowing out of hand signatures... some of that can get real crazy....Last edited by yester18; 07-21-2008 at 10:13 AM.

I understand as well...

I think it is basically common sense and there is really no need for this thread to draw any attention to the matter. The mods are in place to take care of these things. They will notify people if their sig is disruptive or does not follow policy
I would imagine that anyone who uses professional and clean formatting, keeping their signature organized and under 4 lines, should be fine! Excessive use of fonts, obnoxious colors, links to random URLs, etc is a totally different story.
There should be no reason for your signature to come under scrutiny as it is right now, or if you add a link to your fire company. Just make it clean and subtle... no need to be LOUD and OBNOXIOUS like a lot of sigs
haha

Hey All,
I just modified the Rules to clarify/reflect my viewpoint on this... Here it is:
Signatures are allowed, and may contain up to one external hyperlink (points to a webpage outside of CrackBerry.com), but should not be excessive in length nor contain any promotional text (enticing users to click). Traffic leaching will not be tolerated. Additional signature links are acceptable, so long as they point to pages within the CrackBerry.com site (favorite how to article, forum rules, etc.). Signatures should be small and tasteful and take up 1 - 4 lines max in the default font size (the last thing we want is to look at a forum thread and see 15 big signatures that take up all of the screen real estate). Moderators will determine what is acceptable or not.
As with forum spam, if you find signatures that follow outside these guidelines you can report them to the moderation team using the Report Post function (please indicate clearly your reason for reporting).
Hope that's all good!

Do you have "Show your signature" checked below the reply Message box?
When you created your signature, did you preview it? Did it preview correctly? - 08-24-2008, 12:57 PM #25
