I've been to other forums that have this feature. When looking at the list of forums there will be a icon or some kind of visual notification of new posts/threads to the forum. So instead of having to open up the forum to see if there are new posts/threads, you will know.

Agreed, I second this suggestion. It'd make for a better forum experience in my opinion.
