I was wondering if the Z10s cpu had built it thermal protection. Today in a low cell area, the device got so hot that it was uncomfortable to hold. To the point that I shut it off and did not use it for a while. Any snapdragon experts out there that might know?

Sorry I did not see your post, cb did not send me an email. My z is a stl 100-4.

I have not heard of any protection built in to protect from over heating. If you mean - will the phone/OS sense it is 212F and turn off (boiling point of water) - I don't think so. There's supposedly "thermal paste" which I gather helps dissipate heat but, again, I'm not sure that there's an actual sensor to turn it off at some pre-set temperature.

Sorry I did not see your post. Been really busy. The Z got hot like that again and I measured the temp around 50*C and I ran geekbench for bb10, scores were 106 single core and 349 multicore and in the browser it showed cpu freq. at 805mhz. Possibly the CPU has built in sensors and thermal protection like AMD and intel? the phone cooled off and it showed higher scores. 473 single and 816 multi.

That is a screenshot of the thermal paste spread out. It's dried but in a lot better shape than I've seen others. That is what the Z10's CPU is bonded to for heat transfer to the metal plate behind the paste. That's all the passive protection this sucker has...crappy dried thermal paste and gobs of it. I am a firm believer in this being a leading cause of sudden Z10 death due to high heat build-up.

I do not know enough about the physical design of the chips inside to know if it has built in heat protection via transistor. I would be interested in finding this out too though.

Update: here is a very interesting Z10 tear-down thread on another website http://www.blackberryos.com/content/...-insides-5261/

I suppose if someone wanted to, they could look up each chip listed and find out if that chip has built in heat protection. Seems like a lot of work but I'm sure it can be done to find out the result if you wanted it badly enough.

I changed the thermal paste a little while ago to arctic silver 5 when the phone fell in water. You think about it and Intel sets a shutoff point at 100C so I don't think the cpu will degrade that fast.

Well the silicon is not a good conductor at high temperatures.
So no need of protection, it won't conduct and phone will switch off.

Just the opposite - Silicon is a semiconductor and electrical conductivity increases with increasing temperatures. This is completely unrelated to thermal protection in electronics though. When overheated a complex IC will just stop working properly (due to errors in logic), but it won't reduce the heat generated and won't prevent any further damage.

The resistance will increase with higher temps which will mean the SoC will need more power and will draw more from the battery, anyway here is my entirely pocket friendly solution for the z10 over heating. Look at the pic below.Does the Z10 have a built in thermal protection?-z10-heatsink.jpg

How did you know the exact temperature? Just curious about it.
