Government raked in $44.9 billion from wireless auction

This is twice as much money as the last 700 MHz auctions, and 4x the FCC's Chairman's goal. At this rate, TMO just might max out in the early rounds of the 600 MHz auctions.

They spent 1.8B.. maybe the kept some in reserve for the 600 auction.
We wont know any specifics for another 10-14 days on how each company is planning on using their 'winnings'.

So they did go for the J block chunks that were 10x10. AT&T got the NYC J block though, spending more on it than TMO did altogether ($2.76b.)

AT&T was the biggest spender at $18 billion. Interestingly, Dish outspent Verizon.

Government paid of 20billion straight to the national deficit. Even though that is a drop in the bucket, it is still a welcome surprise to see them even trying lol.

This was AWS-3 spectrum, which has a UL of 1755-1780 and DL of 2155-2180--ranges that do not overlap with AWS-1, aka band 4. Therefore I'm guessing band 4 phones won't work on these networks?

There are mitigation costs to free up spectrum. The 1700 band had lots of federal users that hand to be moved. Based on my reading, all were point to point links, so it wasn't like they were buying a plethora of mobile radios. But the links use expensive microwave gear.

I don't think there is any spectrum just laying idle.

Looks like the ITU has come up with a new band-designate combining AWS-1 and AWS-3: band 66, with ranges of 1710-1780/2110-2200.

This will be to band 4 what band 12 is to 17.
