    Hi-

I just bought a new 9720 for my daughter who is 12. I actually quite like it for 105.

Main reason for choosing this model was that she wants a Blackberry keyboard and is keen to get into Whatsapp so she can message her friends.

Her previous phone was a very simple Nokia on pay as you go. I was hoping to just swap SIMs but now discover I may need to obtain something called BIS.?

Does anyone know if Whatsapp will work without BIS - just for wireless network locations eg school and home?

    Also does BIS cost anything?

    Many thanks

    Richard

    Hi Richard,

I strongly suspect you will need BIS to do anything but make phone calls on Blackberry models with OS 7 or below. Depending on your carrier and your data plan, BIS may come free of charge or might cost somewhere around 5 EUR per month. New Blackberries sporting OS 10.x will not need BIS.

    Cheers

In my country BlackBerry with OS 7 uses BIS to access internet like WhatsApp. In my country, we have packages. for example package which for social media and messaging like WhatsApp, LINE, BBM, Facebook, Twitter start from around US$ 3 a month. Only for those feature (without browsing). To have full package is around US$ 8. In regards you want to use sms and call, you need an additional package, which we call it regular. You can try to contact the provider.

I'm almost certain that you will need to add the BIS package to your PAYG tariff in order to use WhatsApp. It costs 5 a month I believe.

I use whatsapp without BIS on my 9900. All I had to do was enter the APN setting for my carrier's regular data plan.

Whatsapp works here fine with a 9780 + 9900 without BIS (provider 3).

If you are on Giffgaff you can add BIS for free when you purchase a data bundle.

You can get a regular data plan (probably the cheapest one, since it is for instant messaging mainly) or get BIS. Both will work for the 9720
