So I called rogers for a passport. They told me it's 249$ on a 2 year term and 700$ out right. They told me if I want it on a contact that they would have to change my plan and they can't give me the plan that I have now. So the new plan with my features would be 90$ and now I lay 70$. And that I'm not due for a upgrade and have to pay 180$ extra to upgrade. Sucks
Looks like if I want a passport I have to buy it outright for 700$ to keep my plan. If not it will be around 500$. And a more expensive plan on contact.....

It's more expensive because it's only a two-year contract to make back the device subsidy ($450 in this case) instead three years like your previous contract.

Call customer retention and get your plan in place before going to the store. That's what I did when I got my Z10.

Funny enough, I got a "promotional" call from Rogers last night saying they had some great new plans. I laughed as they are, like you, more than $20 more than my current plan. Needless to say, the poor girl got quite the earful.

I have unlimited canada wide, voice mail caller ID. 3gb of data. Unlimited video picture text canada wide. And I pay 72$ a month with tax. That's what I need and their telling me they have the same plan but with 4 gb of data for 90$ a month plus tax if I upgrade. And they can't waive the 180 $ from my last contract balance and phone 250$ that's 430$ if I want a new passport and a more expensive plan.

You don't need any special plan for the phone, just be careful of data usage. You are better off, buying the unlocked phone. Its called freedom!

It's not a special plan. It's just the plan that I have now doesn't exist and if I buy the phone under contract im forced to get a new plan which is more expensive for same plan and features. I have 2 options #1 but they phone under contract 250$ plus 180$ from previous contract cause I'm not due for upgrade. And more expensive plan. That would be 430$ to upgrade and have new contract. I have a z30 I could sell for 200-300$ and put that money towards the bill. Or option # 2 buy phone unlocked for 700 $ keep same plan and sell my z30 and put the money towards the new phone....

Call them, select the cancel my account option and the person you get will be able to maintain your plan, plus get you the Passport. You will probably still have to pay off the old device. I think the retension reps do not work on commission or have a lower commission rate than the stores and can usually let you keep your plans.

Same with the IPhone 6 plus. My brother in Vancouver is due for a new contract. His deal is somewhat similar to yours. He has to pay upfront $500 and $20 extra on the $65 plan he has right now for a 2-year plan. That $65 data plan he has right now is only 500mb. These carriers are really greedy. They should be more protests to increase the number of providers in Canada. They are worse than the oil industry.

I don't think the OP was saying that there is a minimum $80/month spend (which would contradict the info from the image you posted). The OP meant that in order to get a plan with features similar to the $70 plan they currently have, they would have to go with a new $90 plan with the only difference between their existing plan and the new one being an extra 1 GB of data (3 GB vs 4GB).

That's the line cost I believe, you have to add data to that...it'll come to 80-90 a month depending on the data.

To the OP, Rogers is "lending" you the money for the phone. They have to pay the wholesale price directly to Blackberry upon delivery. So to get a return for the 500 they lent you, they collect it back via the premium you pay on your plan. Cost-Recovery of new devices is the business model of the carriers via their contracts. Your "free" phone on upgrade is never really free. Customer Retentions may back off a bit on the cost of your plan, but unless you have several accounts with Rogers, don't think they'll give you a great plan +the phone for free just to keep you. Rogers has to turn a profit on the transaction so the retention department wont be giving out new passports, especially since the market is hot for the phone.
