When I hold down a key, it only gives me the speed dial programming. How do I set keys to open apps??

These are all the native BB keypad shorcuts without any 3rd party app:

    A- Addressbook
    B- Browser
    C- Contact lists
    D- Memo Pad
    H- Help
    L - Calendar
    M- Mail
    N- BBM
    O- Options
    P- Phone
    Q- Change sound profile
    S- Search
    T- Task
    U- Calculator
    V- View Saved messages
    W- Voicemail
    X- Windows Live Messenger
    Y- Yahoo Messenger

There's a difference between a short press and a long press. A short press on the A key will bring up the Address Book, whereas a long press on the A key is the same as pressing the Screen Lock button on top of the 9900.

AFAIK, I guess what you'd be looking to do is not possible without using a 3rd party app like QuickLaunch or Super QWERTY.

Yes. Find the wrench icon and tap it to go to settings. Then tap Display. Then tap Home Screen Preferences. At the top you will see a drop down list that has two choices: Universal Search and Application Shortcuts. Change it from Universal Search to Application Shortcuts and press the Back button. Tap Save. Use the Back button to get to your homescreen. Enjoy your new shortcuts.
