I was just doing some reading about the new iPhone and it said that they will allow 3rd party apps for the keypad just like android.

So if BlackBerry took the keypad from bb10 and made it into an app it could sell well. Not to mention how nice it would be to see a BlackBerry keypad on an iPhone.

It would be one more step to get more ppl using BlackBerry in there every day life. It could help the "BlackBerry is out of business" rumors.

What do you guys think? I'm guessing it would be as polarizing as making Bbm cross platform was.

I think a lot of people would pay for it but I'm not sure if that would be a good idea because it would take away from the uniqueness of the BlackBerry 10 smartphones.

Why not? It's all about monetizing their intellectual property and the keyboard patents are definitely worth something. Hard core iPhone users are never going to switch phones anyway, so why not get a piece of their revenue instead of nothing.

I've read in a couple of places that SwiftKey will be in iOS8.

Even if BB made their glass keyboard, itself based on SwiftKey iirc, available in the App Store; how many would bother to upgrade from Swiftkey?

I'm fairly certain that BB's license with SwiftKey (which powers the BB keyboard) would prevent them from using it to compete on other platforms against SwiftKey.

I don't know why BB would do anything to enhance the functionality and popularity of an iPhone or any competitor. The BlackBerry keyboard should remain uniquely BlackBerry in my opinion.

Fair point, but consider that more companies are making cross-platform services and peripherals.

Microsoft just released a keyboard that works with competing platforms.

I'm not saying this is what BlackBerry must do, but it might not be a bad idea.

Yup been saying that since the onset of the typo drama.
Not only for Apple but for android and windows too.
Taking the blackberry experience to all platforms could indeed bring people back to blackberry new line of qwerty devices.

I would then consider switching to an iPhone 6 even more if BlackBerry really isn't bringing out a full touch for another half year at least

I say they should market their software keyboard for the iPhone 6, I think allot of folks would buy it now that you can finally have 3rd party keyboards in IOS 8. Revenue is revenue as far as I concerned and remember that BlackBerry is also in the software business.

As Troy mentioned above, BB's licence to use Swiftkey would probably contain terms preventing BB providing their SwiftKey-based BB10 keyboard to openly compete against the SwiftKey keyboard that is already in iOS8.

I did forget about the SwiftKey licensing agreement, I getting my iPhone 6 on Friday so I will download the SwiftKey keyboard and see what the differences are. It was just a thought.

Steve Jobs was adamant that he wanted to get rid of buttons altogether. Unless they want to kick his wish to the curb, you won't see an iphone with a physical keyboard.

Only reason they should do this is if they give up developing their own handsets. Otherwise it would be a dumb move. Gives people one less reason to buy a BlackBerry over an iPhone.

I don't know but I can tell you that SwiftKey on the iPhone is spectacular. Apple did a really good thing here opening up the keyboard to developers. I've always thought SwiftKey was the best (even better than the BB10 keyboard) and it is absolutely a marriage made in heaven on iOS.

This opens up a whole new world for developers and they will no doubt create some really cool keyboard innovations because of this. But I have to tell you, if you've never used SwiftKey it is hands down the best virtual keyboard that there is.
