    Hi all,

A friend is asking me to help upgrade their TMo Z10 to 10.3. 0.1154. Apparently it's been "acting up". Before doing a backup I noticed a huge amount of text messages. I bought the SMS Backup app and backed up the SMS/MMS messages and discovered something like 23,000 messages.

Should I attempt a non-destructive install or go destructive and restore all the text messages afterwards? Are there any apps/tools to help pare down and archive the really old texts, while keeping more current texts still on the phone?

    Thanks!

Sounds like someone needs to learn how to use the delete function.

Seriously I expect the restore is going to take a massive amount of time. Why are they keeping the old sms messages?

I've had pretty good luck going non-destructive with the 10.3 leaks I've tried thus far. I do always create a backup first, but I haven't needed any of them yet. Sounds like a good option in this case.

Use sms backup like you have. Load up new OS. Restore the texts. Then go into hub, choose to view texts only, long press on a date and choose delete prior.

That's how I would do it?

    Good luck!

Sounds like a plan. I'll give it a shot.

Do a complete backup just to be safe via Link and backup the messages via SMS backup to be doubly safe.

A non-destructive update will be the easiest since you will not be having to do a restore (probably), but be aware that when the update completes, it could be quite a while until you're able to view the messages and to have them display the contact's name instead of just the phone number. There is an indexing process that will occur. It could take more than an hour before the SMS app even responds.

I finally did the non-destructive upgrade yesterday. Friend was too busy texting in the meantime. For some reason all prior versions of Sachesi was giving me problems, but v1.8 was the charm. the non-destructive update went without a hitch.

In 4 days, my friend managed to add well over 600+ text messages. It took SMS Backup 25 min to backup and create a zip file. I can't seem to post the picture via CB10, but there were 23,597 messages going back to the day the phone was purchased. Zip file was 193 MB.

Anyway, we'll have to see how many days it takes the Z10 to index all the files and let the battery settle down.

    Thanks everyone.

True. Up to her to delete though. Although 10.3 did address one "major" gripe as she can now see iPhone emoji.

Is there a way to selectively back up and restore text messages? SMS Backup seemed to be an all or nothing event. Would be nice to be able to backup or restore a specific party's text messages from a certain date back or forward.

SMS Backup uses CSV files so the backup file can be edited before a restore. It will take forever to run the backup though.

I helped my brother upgrade the os on his Z10 and he had 36,000 TXT. I thought it would NEVER get done.

They're text messages people. Even 100,000 won't be a very large database. Do you guys even understand SMS and storage?
