I was at a garden party yesterday afternoon and as such was polite enough not to use my Z30 at all.

I had only 3 notifications in total. 2 Facebook and 1 Email, to which I did not respond.

Arrived home about 8 pm, took the phone out of the holster and it was quite hot. When I checked battery monitor, BBM was sitting at 25% and the drain had started at about 5 pm.

This is the second time this has happened and I don't know whats kicking it off. In the 7 years I've been with BlackBerry I have NEVER EVER used BBM.

Hard reset fixed it but whats causing it?

I'm on OS 2977. Any ideas?

If you don't use it you should disable it
It might help you save some battery

    @OP

In other threads on this topic it appears that a phone reset will fix it, albeit temporary.

I'm still of the belief that depending on the way BBM is set up initially it is always polling other services on the phone like contacts and location, and that could be why. Especially in bad service areas. Anyway, I have never heard or read BlackBerry's take on the issue.

I've mentioned before that during set up of BBM I made sure to not allow BBM to send my contacts to their servers and I have locations services mostly turned off. I use BBM and channels lightly and it's never given me any grief.

Yes, I wish you could shrink it out like you could on legacy devices.

I have had Bbm do that too. Just randomly, usually when I add a new contact.
When I feel it starting to heat up I just restart and it's fine after.
Hopefully the powers that be will correct the issue.

In the morning before it happened, I did delete a number from a contact. Maybe your onto something there! Perhaps it gets fixed in 10.3.1

Have you checked if location is enabled in bbm settings?

It funny that this is the first post I see. Cause this has happened to me again. It's happened a few times and I have even wrote a thread about it. Just 20 minutes ago I found my phone to be a little warm. So to the app management page and to my surprise, over 30%bbm. And almost dead battery. This is very random, it's been about 2 weeks since the last time.
    Hey BlackBerry fix this!

I opened BBM to check and realised that I would have to sign up to it first. Didn't want to do that.
