I have already posted this in the leaked OS section but probably here the post will get more visibility.

We saw few weeks ago a video showing more than 4 active frames running simultaneously on the Z3 with 10.3.. well here we are, just installed the new leak and with 10.3.0.1052 also the Z3 will obtain the capability to run 8 apps at the same time like the other bb10 devices.

It runs them extremely well (even when you open android apps). I really like what I am seeing here..

    Eight active frames with 10.3-img_20140824_134317.png

This denotes also how the software has been further optimized to better manage the resources available.

If you consider that 10.3.0 is not even designed for the Z3 (it is specifically built for the Passport) it is REALLY impressive.

Great!so we actually have 8 active frames now. I'm curious if the memory allocated for system is less in 10.3 so it allows us to have 8? Can you please post 2 screen shots of system memory when there is no active frame and when there are 8 of them?

More Active Frames is always better but will be battery drainer hope BlackBerry has tackle this problem
A resizeable active frame is more helpful which will act like Tiles similar to Windowsphone OS.

Took the screen shots.. and what I can say is... wow!!!

Here the situation after a fresh restart with no active frames opened

Here you can see the memory with 8 frames opened (native apps). Let me remind you that this was after a fresh restart without the android runtime launched

    Eight active frames with 10.3-img_20140824_124408.png

And lastly 8 frames opened after I opened an android game

Memory usage has been drastically improved. I remember that 10.2.1.xxxx was using 1-1.2Gb
The core OS plus services uses now less than 700Mb. It is really really impressive what they have accomplished here...

Thanks a lot for the screen shots!

Yes it IS improved tremendously. On 10.2.1 you'll never get more than 500MB free memory.

I believe it will get 10.3.1 like the rest Except for Passport and classic which will get 10.3.

When you have 8 active frames AND are scrolled down on the active frames page, the bottom 4 active frames revert to the old behavior (most recent = top left)

Sounds to me like BlackBerry wants you to never close apps + keep 4 the first 4 active frames open and locked in position (things like device monitor, weather, clock, etc..)

And use the next 4 spots for app switching

By the way, can you please try picture password on 10.3 to see if it has been sped up? On 10.2.1, it's kinda slow. 1 second to load number grid, then another second to unlock usually.

Picture password is a feature I use all the time. Frankly I cannot notice the delay you mention, the activation time actually does not differ significantly from the one of the Z30. I have tried to unlock both simultaneously. Not a scientific experiment in any mean but also the Z3 with 10.3 is FAST!

Here's how it works on 10.2.1

    https://db.tt/cukIWlw9

You can see there are two pauses. One is before loading number grid and one is before it unlocks. Each takes one second.

Simple password is much faster but it's not as secure as picture password.

Thanks for the video. Well it is difficult to evaluate it but I definitely think that it is "snappier " on 10.3
In any case also in your video the lag does not seem so terrible. We are talking milliseconds here...

Well, I think we're talking seconds here. If you notice, it takes 1 second (in the video, from 0:03 to 0:04) to load the number grid, and another second (0:06 to 0:07) to unlock.

I agree with you that it's not terrible. Sometimes it just feels frustrating when you wanna do something on the go or need to check something really quick.

Do you have time for a similar short video on 10.3? Then we can compare.

By the way, how do you see the battery life of Z3 on 10.3 so far? Is it any better than 10.2.1?

Thank you very much for all the responses so far.

I will try to shoot the video during the weekend so you can see it.

Regarding battery life I cannot answer because I had 10.2.1 on the Z3 when I was traveling in Indonesia and now I am in the US and I have installed 10.3.

We are comparing two completely different networks so I feel I would not provide a reliable feedback. Plus I am not using it as a daily driver (for work I use a Q10) and my usage would be definitely on the "light" part.
