    Hi everybody,

neither Arkick or Startracker, nor my compass is working anymore. It seems, as if the magnetometer is broken. I read different post about it. Is this a hardware, software/driver problem? What can I do, to get it back working?

    My phone details fyi:

    Z10 STL 100-2
    SW 10.2.1.2977
    OS 10.2.1.3247

    Thanks in advance

    Phil

Use BlackBerry Virtual Expert to test the Sensor.

Try reloading your OS, if it's a software problem that should fix it.

Use BlackBerry Virtual Expert to test the Sensor again.... it could just be a bad sensor that would require a repair.

    Thanks for your answer.

Bve says the magnetometer is not available. Additionally, I can't find any single test for the magnetometer.

How likely will the magnetometer work after reloading the OS?

    Greetings, Phil

How old is the phone - warranty?

There is a test but if it does not show up as available, the test is probably not offered.

Other than time, backup, etc, reloading the OS should not be an issue. It may not solve but you can give it a try.

Hi, the phone is one and a half year now.
I'll try to reload the OS. Thanks for your encouragement.

I assume you did do a hard reset with the volume UP and Down keys...

When you say, "anymore," I assume it was working OK before? If so, any idea what's been changed since then?

My Z10 is on Verizon, but for what it's worth one of their OS releases broke my compass too a few months ago (it had been working fine until then). In looking around the forum, it seems as if all the Verizon Z10 compasses stopped working until the next OS came out. The latest official releases fixed it again.

I never did a hard reset with the volume keys... just took screen shots this way

Exactly, katesbb. I didn't use arkick for several weeks, but tried last week in Munich. Arkick, Stratracker and Compass were working before. I can't say exactly what changed since then. There defenitely was an OS update, but I can't say if this caused the malfunction

I have same hardware, same OS version, exactly the same problem.

I'm waiting to see whether 10.3.1 fixes it. If not, I was looking at a Z30 anyway

I have a similar problem but it is occurring on my Z30, my wife's Z10, and another Z10 I bought recently so it seems to be a real issue with BlackBerry's ability to install a functional magnetometer.

I need my compass for work so that I can pinpoint satellites and towers, however when using the compass on the phones it continues to wander slowly to the east. I can take a heading...put the phone at my side for a second, than try to get the same bearing again and I has moved. this happens every time, and on many different locations. I'm thinking I'm either gonna have to get a compass or an android. Lol.

Long shot... download "GPS Status" from BBerry world and run it. It does compass as well as GPS. Try "tools", and "Calibrate pitch and roll". Worth a try.

Can someone go into the location services of their escreen and post a screen shot of their default settings? Preferably a Z30STA100-5 I want to see if there is something there that's preventing the issue.

Did those basic settings/functions help? So many sub-options it would be complex to follow them all.

I'm not sure if they helped specifically or directly, but toggling them on and off leaving them remaining in the position according to your screen shot, followed by a reboot, seemed to get the magnometer back to working state, so again a big thanks :-)

    Most welcome.

I do wish BB has made getting to the escreen just a bit easier. Entering hexidecimal numbers, long uptime values, OS numbers, then getting back another hexidecimal value which you blindly type............ Yikes!!!! But they don't want us in there.

I wish they had an ability to set ALL to factory defaults with one click while in the menu, or at least the ability to save and export the settings (kind of like backing up Windows OS system registry) it would be nice.

That would be nice. But in fact, there are settings in there that once changed can NEVER to "back-pedaled" which is why they make it difficult to even get in there. And as with the screen I shot for you, there are submenus in all those various places. Very complex.
