I went to my local coffee shop to update my BB 10 operating system for Z10 using their free WiFi. I checked my cellular company data usage before doing this and it was at 96mb. The day after my data usage was 1.33GB. What's going on?

The coffee shop's wifi was obviously not working and your Z10 chose to download the update via mobile data.

check your settings. make sure you are set to prefer wifi over cellular. if the coffee shops wifi was slow the phone would switch back to cellular data.

....though now that Ive said that I cant find the setting. maybe I am mistaken.

That's too bad for me. The only option showing up was "connect to Wifi" with a list of networks. I was not given the option to update in any other way than WiFi.

So, would anybody know, for next time, the best way for me to disable data but allow WiFi on a Z10? Hopefully I can avoid a repeat of this.

OK, fair enough, that wasn't hard to find. Apologies that in some ways my questions can be basic. This is my first real smartphone in since the 8320 some years back, and I don't often use WiFi. But, one more basic question though - I'm wondering if I may have been prompted to enable the hotspot when I connected to the WiFi network? I might have accidentally agreed to enable it and maybe that was my mistake.

No you are usually prompted for a hotspot, unless you have turned hotspot notifications off that is..

Maybe it was a limited connection or something
