I have been using my BB (unlocked) on 4 different GSM networks in 3 European countries. Now, in the UK it worked fine with a Vodafone sim, but when I wanted to try Three (3), the card got activated, one call placed, and then the signal disappeared and that was it. Called customer service, they said my phone isn't 3G capable, so it wouldn't work and wouldn't I like to buy a new phone. No, I wouldn't. The phone is getting kinda old though, so I didn't find any conclusinve data wether it's 3G capable or not. Anybody? Thanks!

The 8800/8830 series of devices were always 2G capable, no 3G capabilities. I'm surprised you were able to use the 8830 in other countries because that the CDMA variant but I guess that's why it was called the "World Edition".

The CDMA part can be only used in the US (originally a Verizon phone; was used with MetroPCS which is also CDMA). It's GSM outside N.America.
Thanks for the reply... Are all GSM networks moving towards 3G or it depends on what kind of sim you've got?

That's the general progression, yes. But if there's a solid, dense 3G network in place already, I could see carriers skipping 3G and moving to refarm their spectrum to LTE.

In your case, specifically, what happened is that 3 does not have a 2G network, and since you have a 2G-only GSM phone, you can't use this phone on 3.
