Hi guys what are your opinions on device encryption? Should I encrypt my device, and what are the disadvantages?

How much security do you need?

Anything on the device that you would not want others to get?

I think for most consumers encryption isn't needed. You would take a hit on performance, but doubt with today's hardware you would really notice it.

I like pulling my SD Card out and coping files to it directly from my computer, so I personally don't want my Media Card Encrypted. And as my device is password protected, and I don't know of anything that would be worth going through the process of accessing the data directly from the memory.... I don't Encrypt my Device.

I'm with scalemaster. I don't use it as I don't carry top secret stuff and if someone stole my phone I guess they can enjoy the pics etc. On my phone.

I encrypt my phone but not my SD card. I do this only because I keep a copy of my passport and related documents on my phone. I assume that an image of my passport would be useful if I were to lose my passport while traveling out-of-country.

Does this in anyway effect access to files etc required by certain applications? Like would it leave it accessible but still encrypted to _ server for _ application

Thanks for your reply! Well I have my banking card linked to my phone for buying apps and stuff, so I wouldn't want that information getting out... Oh wait, there are certain WhatsApp & BBM conversations I wouldn't want people reading - it would be better if we could just lock certain apps..

Other than that I don't have anything that really needs protection. Well I've ended up encrypting my device but not the SD card. Also, does your username "scalemaster34" refer to you being a master of musical scales?...

Aah! Smart move. I have my bank card details on my phone so I decided to encrypt my device as well, and not the SD card.

I'm not really sure, I haven't had any problems yet. And I don't use Android apps that much anymore, noticed they drain my battery much faster than normal. But so far no problems with app permissions/access to files.

Just remember if you do encrypt the SD card it will be unreadable in anything else and it must be decrypted in the same device.
