Hey guys and girls, we're 3 Z10ers in my family and my sister wanted to get on the Z30 bandwagon.

Thing is, she drops her Z10 maybe 3 times a day and spilled water, coffee and whatever else on it. It has been abused and nothing ever happened.

    ALL WITHOUT A CASE!

Is the Z30 as solid? Because I know it has glass covering it until the top and the Z10 has a plastic bezel.

From whoever experienced the Z10 to Z30 switch.

    Thanks!

There's no real answer to your question. Your sister has just been lucky thus far. The wrong drop in the right place can kill any phone. If you REALLY need an opinion though the Z30 is pretty much a tank and on par or exceeds the durability of the Z10. It's not as 'open' of a device as the Z10, so there's less parts to actually break off, less holes for liquid to get into and it's certainly heavier which may help keep it on the table and in her hands or work against her and cause her to drop it more lol.

I know she has been super lucky because I've seen small drops destroy phones and huge ones leave it intact.

Built like a tank is good.

The only thing is if the glass is made tougher or if it's simply the same exact composition. If anyone has official specs on that, it would be awesome!

    Thanks Bla1ze!

I would suggest you that you get a a very sold case for the phone, in case she does drop the phone

    Something like this:

    Otterbox BlackBerry z30 case:

She wouldn't get a case like that. She got the poet for the 10 and barely used it.
    Thanks

I don't think she should be getting an expensive phone if she is not capable to take care of it or is willing to use a case. But that's just my opinion.

I had a z10 without a case for a year, didn't break. I drop it occasionally and have spilled water (not a substantial amount) and have had my z30 for 4 and a half months? I've dropped it a few times and have some knicks here and there, but its not broken. I have gotten a case recently, because as much as I love the feel of the phone, I don't want to go out one night and wake up with it broken. Just wait for the z10 to break (if it happens) and then upgrade

The z30 has gorilla glass(a very durable from of glass) whereas the z10 has some standard glass! And the bezels in the z30 don't chip of like the z10 and as it is heavier, it won't slip off from tables etc!

where did you get the info about gorilla glass? to my understanding bb doesn't use gorilla glass, but a different make, also for z10.

The silver bezel at the bottom of the Z30 gets scratched or nicked way easily than my Z10's bezel!

Three time a day with liquid in the mix, just asking for trouble without a case. I don't know what it is about my Z30, but I have always been more careful with it then any other phone I have had, I think its because I would be devistated it I broke it.

I've dropped a Z10 once, shattered the display and it was completely unusable. I was on my way to miss my plane last week and dropped my Z30 on its upper right hand corner. It cracked the glass. so I put some clear tape on that and it still works. It is awkward of course and not a sustainable situation because any kind of impact could further shatter the glass, but still: it works even with the broken glass.

The message of it all is: do not drop your phone, but if you drop one, it might perhaps better be the Z30. On the other hand, getting a replacement screen was more of a challenge for the Z30 than it would be for the Z10 today. Luckily, I found a store that sold a returned Z30 with a damaged battery cover, which is perfect for me. The delivery guy is on its way as we speak so in a couple of hours I will have a perfect Z30 once more.

I will have to add, that if your sister drops her Z10 quite a bit, expect her to drop the Z30 at least 10 times more per day. The Z30 is bulkier and quite a challenge for people to do anything on it with just 1 hand. I've got big hands and even I have struggled typing on it on occasion. She might not appreciate it, but If she ends up getting the Z30, I'd definitely consider trying to convince her to get a protective case.

The only thing mine has ever been in is a pocket pouch. 3 or 4 times, yes I'm slow lol, I have had it in my upper jacket pocket and bent over to pick something up and out goes the phone on the cement. The top isn't covered in the pouch and that's where it always lands. I have a nice chip on the top right corner but no breakage anywhere. Not sure how it would be if it wasn't in the pouch when it happened. I hate cases so I guess I take my chances.

Yeah agree with most of the opinions here, any drop in the wrong angle will absolutely destroy any phone. So she has been really lucky. Having used both the Z10 and Z30.

The Z30 because of the weight and the backcover seem to make it feel like a real sturdy device, however drop on the front, may put a dent/scratch/crack on the silver bezel or the worst the top portion which is largely unprotected. So the Z10 has a slight advantage in that aspect.

However the backcover of the Z30 is almost impossible to scratch, keys won't cause damage it to for sure. Of course casing is another option, but understand that she doesn't use it. So I guess just leave it be until a real unfortunate situation happens. Having said that, the Z30 is a worthy upgrade in many ways.

Yup, the bezels definitely do not chip off like the Z10. On the Z30 they chip just by looking at them.

Build quality wise, Z30 is a piece of junk compared to the Z10, and yes, this was posted from my Z30STA100-5/10.2.1.3175.

The fact BlackBerry uses touch on lens bothers me a bit. I'd rather have a cracked screen and it's still usable than not. Especially in emergency situations.

I had a z10 for a year and dropped it on a daily basis, I even intentionally threw it a few times to show BlackBerry haters how durable it was on it took every bit of abuse. I upgraded to a Z30 after leaving the 10 in a cab in Vegas. So far I dropped the 30 a few times (the size makes it easy to hold) and it's held up, unlike my wife S4 which has been replaced twice in 6 months due to a cracked screen after she dropped it with a case mind you from as low as 18 inches.
