If the Nexus 5 wasn't enough proof that a top-speced devices are overpriced, here's further proof: a startup that can do this certainly provides evidence that BlackBerry could make low volume high-spec phones and sell them at competitive prices profitably. That is, a BlackBerry superphone doesn't have to bear a all-in cost of $500 per device, nor does it have to sell at $1200 to be profitable.

All that has to happen here is for the market for a BlackBerry 10 superphone(s - plural for different form factors) to be identified and I think a lot of the in-fighting in the BlackBerry community is made redundant... that is to say, it should not be the case that BlackBerry has to release a very limited device line and leave advocates of other form-factors out in the cold... a Q10 successor (high-end belt-less QWERTY), the Q20 (high-end belted QWERTY), the Z30 successor (high-end large screen) Z3 (low end large screen) Z10 successor (mid-tier not overlarge screen) and even (yes) a slider (possibly both with and without the Belt) should all be within the realm of feasibility... if BlackBerry chooses to adopt a model where they do modest production runs and are able to ramp up to meet demand (the holy grail of modern supply chain management / ERP). If they can do that well, then everybody wins.

Google is becoming more restrictive and that could change. BB is going to have to find third world markets and get a lot of help on the hardware cost by being associated with FoxConn. The problem of connecting the phone to the tablet and even the desktop is severe. Think that most people don't want to have to deal with a couple of different operating systems. Both Microsoft and Apple are in a position to integrate the three or more levels and Google is getting there. Well see how smart Chen is.

I think you'll find that BlackBerry gives it's OS to Foxconn for free too. I don't see your point. The OP was stating that the production of top specced handsets doesn't have to be prohibitively expensive.

Re: cost of development of BB10 OS: that's a sunk cost at this point: they don't lose money putting BB10 on millions more devices... they actually make money doing it. Even so, go ahead and amortize the cost of development of BB10 into all the BB10 handsets sold and the more they sell, the lower the per-device cost is, so... I guess I don't know what it has to do with the hardware at all I guess.

Google can give the OS for free and subsidize the cost of the phone by making money of Google search, ads, maps and other services.
BlackBerry also will have to make money off services to be able to offer cheap devices.
Apple doesn't make money off services that's why they didn't enter the low price phone market

Yes, that's obvious to everyone and BlackBerry also, hence the OP and the Foxconn deal. The OP pointed out that cheaper device production can be achieved and BlackBerry is clearly seeking to do that.

and yet the market seems more than happy to pay for overpriced Apple and Android devices... BlackBerry could broaden their device portfolio without going out of business if the number of devices produced is not based on overly optimistic sales expectations.

Google aren't supplying the OS for the OnePlus One, it's from CyanogenMod which is a custom ROM based on the Android Open Source Project.
