    Hello Everyone,

Asking knowledgeable persons on crackberry - about the scare I got this morning. Suddenly noticed a notification saying this:
    ----------------------------
    Version 10.2.1.2179 - Size 415MB
This is a mandatory software update that will be downloaded and installed automatically.
You can continue to use.... blah blah blah....
    ---------------------------------

I got scared since I don't want to update my phone without knowing if this OS has any issues etc or not. Upon checking my "Software Updates" settings - I saw that automatic updates are "On". So I quickly changed it to "Off". But the update kept on downloading.

So I switched off my phone for few minutes - thinking that this will prevent the OS download. However, upon switching the phone on again - I noticed that my wifi did not automatically connect - and consequently the OS download did not proceed. I switched wifi on manually and immediately the OS started downloading again. So I switched the wifi off again. I verified the Software Update settings - and that is still set to "Off".

So I am using my phone today keeping the Wifi off. My question is this - If I switch the Wifi on and the phone downloads the OS update - will it force install it automatically? I recently updated my phone to 10.2.1.2228 and am not really interested in updating now - don't have the time to go through the hassle - especially when there are no new features to benefit from.

    Please help?

Normally no you aren't forced to update.

But your phone being initially set for automatic updates has initiated the "process". Not sure if it can be stopped, I would think it would be possible. But based on your experiences, it doesn't sound like it is.

Go into settings, see if there is an update process you can kill under the CPU Setting??

Didn't see anything that stood out in the CPU under Device Monitor. Then connected wifi - which restarted the OS download process. Checked CPU again - nothing again. It seems this is happening under the "system" service.

Not being able to find anything - turned off wifi again.

Hoping to hear from someone who has gone through this and can provide some definite answer - before I let the update continue - or an appropriate method to kill the download process.

I have two Z10's on AT&T. I got a notification in HUB yesterday with the mandatory update message and before I could back out the update was loading. My wife's Z10 didn't get the message but I noticed the wifi was turned off on it this morning. When I turned on wifi the update started before I knew it. Both were running 10.2.1.2102 prior to that. I too was going to wait for a while to see comments before updating. Monitoring situation now to see if I notice any problems.

Why stop a good thing? The update should have bug fixes...

My wife still hasn't gotten the update, but I did get an update, but still have some of the weird things from my leak... we were on different leaks, haven't checked her phone yet today, I need to do that when I go down the hall.

My update downloaded in bedside mode, then when I said not to update, it had updated by the time I grabbed the phone to get out of the house and head to work. It was a weird push IMHO.

First off, ota updates are non-destructive, so there is no "hassle" to speak of. All your apps and info will remain. It will take some time for some of your info to finish indexing, such as calendar appointments, text messages and contacts. If you have wifi at home, you can do it while you sleep or during down time. Secondly, it doesn't look like you can stop the update unless you keep wifi off, and I doubt you can function without it.

My phones weren't force-updated but they have never been set to update automatically. I used an autoloader to install the AT&T update.

Back up your phones as soon as you can while the updates haven't been installed in case you want to downgrade.

I've been using the latest update from AT&T and haven't seen any issues at all compared to T-Mobile update I previously used.

It will take a while for the phone to settle down after the update so expect your phone to run warm for a while. My phones settled after about 4 hours and resumed normal operating temperature.

Keep your phones plugged into chargers until then.

But 10.2.1.2179 is older then 10.2.1.2228 that you say you now have installed, so how can it downgrade in this matter?

You're mixing Software release with OS release. 10.2.1.2179 SW gives you 10.2.1.2273 OS.

I got this same message today and my Automatic Updates is turned OFF. So how can my phone be forced to update when I have it set not to? BTW, I have 10.2.1.537 from Rogers, got tired of AT&T sitting on the update so I did it myself.

Carrier will override settings for a mandatory update. Very possible because of security fixes.
