Can a non BIS phone be used with BES and because of the BES subscription receive the same services of a BIS phone, or would a BIS plan still be required?

Back in the day, BIS and BES were two separate plans from the carriers. Today, BIS is no more, it's just a Data plan now, so you should be able to activate a BIS device on a BES with no problem. Your biggest issue will be BES IT Policy. That can severely limit your abilities, it can also enchance your abilities with your device. For instance you could increase the file attachment size when sending messages like BBM and Emails.

OK so if I were to use a legacy device (in this case an 8800) on a normal carrier all I would need is BES then, not a BIS service?

Incorrect, you'll just need a data plan. There is no separation of BIS/BES plans anymore.

OK I think I see what you're saying. My issue is that I use an MVNO so I think the issue of BIS persists but only because of the MVNO apn differences, unless they now support the system.

Also, in the absence of BIS support for BlackBerry devices on MVNO's, can BES subscriptions cover the void of no BIS support, such as browser, email, and BBM, which do not work on mvno's other than simple mobile (only simple mobile supports BlackBerry services). Since BES is server and not carrier provisioned, can they provide the required data services for non BIS supporting carrier use? And which BES licence does OS 4.5 use?

Haha that was supposed to be BIS/BES. Oops. Not sure how to change that on the cb10 app. The Z10 keyboard really doesn't know what BIS is!

Yes BES can support BIS functions such as browser, email, and BBM. It all depends on how its set up. Also, keep in mind BBM is a BlackBerry service, and although you connect your device to BES, your device will still connect to the BlackBerry NOC. Even the BES instance itself will connect to the BlackBerry NOC via the SRP supplied by BlackBerry. Also, any BES instance should be able to support OS 4.5, although I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to upgrade your devices. If you want more bang for your buck, you might as will invest in BES10. No since in investing in BES 5.0.4 or below.

Any carrier offering BES data plans will include BIS functionality in the plan as well. That's why BES is more expensive than BIS. At least in Canada and the US.

I did a little research, any non BB10 phone does still require a BES plan as you've stated. BB10 phone only require a general data plan.

OK. I'm going to see about which mvno's support bis. At this point simple mobile looks like the most viable option.

While you're right, the information is dated considering the changes that have come along with the introduction on BB10 and BES10.

I had already read this but it didn't go into details that I had questions about anyways.
