I post this here (in leaked OS) as this problem just came about after the VZE "upgrade".
--I was running a leaked .2141 before this problem started.
--Next, by accident, I accepted the VZW over the air update, which is .2122.
--Shorty thereafter (but I am not certain if it occurred immediately upon loading VZW's .2122), my headphones no longer work. I have tried multiple sets of headphones. None work. No sound, no mircophone operation.
--That strikes me as a hardware problem (the 3.5 jack), and since I cannot 100% pin the time of this failure to the VZW "upgrade", I cannot be 100% sure whether hardware failure or OS issue. It was very close to the time of the "update".
Does anybody have a similar experience? Any insights?

I once had an issue with pocket lint stuck inside the headphone input, it was obstructing the connection, probably not what's going on, but worth a look, shine a flashlight down the hole and see if there is a build up of something, i was able to remove it with a pin, obviously if this is the issue be careful.

If you're unsure then backup/ security wipe, autoloader and if it works. If it does then restore your stuff back
